White Oaks Cinema House and Theater Build- A BIGmouthinDC Build

This thread is a long time coming. I just started building a new house and have been planning this day for a long, long time. I have always dreamed of a dedicated theater and to design and build something without any limitations (except for unlimited funds
). I bought a house 6 years ago and turned one of the bedrooms into a theater (build thread link below) and I started drawing plans for this house shortly after we moved in. The bedroom/theater was on the second level of the old house and I always wanted a dedicated room on the main level. That is one of the main reasons we decided to build. You rarely see a home with space on the main level for a theater. I started working on the floorplan and went through hundreds of revisions until we finally finalized them about 3 months ago.

The house will not be done until May/June but I wanted to create a build thread to document the progress of the house build as well as the theater build. Some of the most memorable threads I have read on here have been house builds along with the theater. I just went through and read my build thread from 6 years ago and it was pretty neat catching up on the process for the theater. Anyway, I plan to have the builder finish out the room with clips, hat channel, double drywall with green glue and that is pretty much it. I have been in touch with BIGmouthinDC and plan to enlist his help/expertise on the theater. I am really excited about that part! I have been planning this house/theater for 10+ years. It is going to be a fun ride!

Here is the build thread for my old house/theater build:

Updated 10/20/15:
This theater could not have been possible without so many people’s help and expertise. I wanted to recognize and give a special thank you to the following:

My builder Michael Allen Homes – Michael and Chris, you were amazing throughout the whole process and thank you for putting up with all of my requests about the theater room during the construction process.

BigMouthinDC- Jeff, Thank you so much for all of your planning, work and vision to help make this theater what it is. I really enjoyed getting to know you and working with you over those 2-3 months. If there is one person I couldn’t have done without it would definitely be you. Hopefully if you are down south you can come by and watch a movie and see your hard work in action. THANK YOU!

My wife- The best painter in Auburn. She painted probably 75% of the room and lobby and did a great job. Not to mention all of the times I needed a second set of hands and she was willing to help. She heard some new cuss words quite a few different times. haha

@Electrodynamic Nick at Stereo Integrity- You made my bass dreams come true. Nick was awesome to deal with. I probably sent him 50+ emails and he was always great at answering my questions. Thanks for taking the time through texts, calls and emails to go above and beyond with everything. I really appreciate everything! SI and Nick were truly a pleasure to deal with.

@rsh Roman with RT Theaters- Great service and even better theater chairs. I had an issue with one of the cup holders and sent Roman an email on Saturday. I got a call about 5 minutes later with some troubleshooting ideas. It was a bad cup holder and he sent one out first thing Monday morning.

John at Full Compass- Thank you for the amazing deals on the JBL’s, all of the amps and great, fast service.

@snickers1 Rich at Falcon Screens- The screen is fantastic and I appreciate you taking the time and going the extra mile with several of the requests. Thank you Rich!

Cyr at FOSI.com- Thanks for all of your work and help on the star ceiling. I think it turned out great and really appreciate you going out of your way to see that it got done correctly.
@J_P_A- I could not have finished the Volt-10’s without you! I appreciate all your help and still owe you! I can’t wait to check out your theater once it is finished. P.S. I told you I would be finished before you. :D

@beyond- Thanks for coming over and helping out during the build process. It was great to have another set of hands and appreciate it! I am looking forward to seeing your room!

@Erich H - diysoundgroup.com- Thanks for saving me a ton of money on some awesome surround speakers. You do not get enough credit for all you do for the DIY community here. The Volt’s are one of the best values around. Thank you for making that happen.

@Mike Garrett at AV Science Sales- Thanks for the great deal on the projector and for answering all of my questions. If you need anything check with Mike. He will take care of you.

I am sure I left a lot of people off and I apologize in advance for that.

I was wondering when you would get around to starting a thread. Excited to see this take shape. Having suffered through the process, be warned that you might as well go to Columbus for your hat channel and Linacoustic. You can PM me if you need specifics, but all of the 25 ga. channel that I found locally was most definitely not!

Are you and BIG planning to design the theater, or will you be enlisting EG?

Thanks for the info on the hat channel. I will definitely be in touch with you on that. Will shoot you a PM.

Yours is looking good! I need to come take a look at it sometime. If I can ever get away from work for a little bit I will be glad to help out if you need it.

BIG and I are planning on designing the theater. It will have a lot of similarities to the Cinemar theater as far as colors, ceiling, molding and columns.

Cool! I am very familiar with that area. I am a real estate agent so I drive through there probably once a week. Good to know Auburn is well represented on here. War Eagle!

I think we need a sand carrying meet-up. Sometime next year.

Not sure I get it...

Finally getting my wife's bookshelves done for her library... after that; I can finally start off on the visual side of things for my build and do some sound treatments. (M&K's are really bright)

Already have my system installed from when we built the house... been collecting for a while so some of it is older but still sounds great.

Speakers

M&K S-150THX fronts and center

M&K SS-150THX Rears

M&K SS-500THX Sides

M&K MX-350THX Right sub

M&K MX-150THX Left Sub

Video

120 inch powered screen; forget brand

Optoma HD20 (old one yes, going to replace soon)

Elite DVL-91 (laserdisc / dvd player)

Openelec box (xbmc)

Amps / Preamp

Parasound HCA2003 Left right center

Parasound HCA1000a Side left

Parasound HCA1000a Side right

Parasound HCA1000a rears

Integra DHC 9.9 (getting older too but still runs it well)

Been building out the room in Sketchup so I can hopefully get wife approval... Figured I'd give her the first choice on fabrics for the sound panels since I want to cover just about all the walls up.

Now to just find some reclaimed wood for my front facade... You Auburn guys know of any places?

Auburn, I just have to say that that house is going to be gorgeous, and I love all the trees. I can see why you're going for all the subs; you won't have to worry about waking up neighbors.

Actually I can probably help you there on the reclaimed wood. I have pretty good relationships with several higher end builders who do a lot of reclaimed wood in interiors. PM me on a little more information and I will see what I can do.

Love those parasound amps. I had several over the years. Great amps for the money. We seriously do need to have a meet once we get ours done. Maybe by that time JPA will be finishing framing up the front stage.

Sand carrying meet up. All the local theater guys meet at Auburn08s place for a preview of the theater under construction. While I guard the cooler, all the local talent carries the stage sand inside.
I will pay for the beverages in the cooler!

Special sand carrying party preview is happening at my house on Wednesday. I'll have to fill in watching the cooler since BIG can't make it. PM me for details - it's only a 2.5 hour drive.
It is only an hour and fifteen minutes to the Atlanta airport. You must be on the other side of Atlanta. Sorry, driving through downtown Atlanta isn't an option. If you were on this side I would be there with my gloves on eager to help.

Thanks! We are really excited about the whole thing. It has been a long time coming. Just ask BIG. I started bothering him well over a year ago. We bought the lot about 3 years ago and have been planning ever since.

Most of the homes in the city limits here all have small lots with neighbors 10 feet on each side. I am hoping with my sound proofing efforts things are contained pretty well in the room but if they are not my neighbors are far enough away where I should be ok.
