Who can tell me which processor this is?

I'm trying to repair a Rock+ It has a AMD processor. I think it's a victom of a plugged cooling fan. The fan was plugged and the processor core looks as though it's over heated and a small chip is missing from the corner. Here are the numbers,

AMD Duron

D700AUT1B

AKCA0111RPBW

E8795660422

1999 AMD

Do I need the exact one or can I replace it with something else/better? Thanks,

Chip

Its a AMD Duron 700MHz processor for the Socket A... it has a "Spitefire core" (the very original Duron core)....

That's a tough question. While there were plenty of Socket A processors produced (both Athlons and Durons...which should be easily available through 3rd party sellers if you sought one), there are some things you might want to consider. With a regular motherboard, the ability to upgrade to a newer processor (of the required socket type) could very well be limited by electrical considerations (i.e. different voltage characteristics of the newer processors than that of the older line of cpu's that the board was intended to utilize) and by bios code that might not recognize the cpu microcode of the newer processors.

I would contact the manufacturer of the board inside the Rock+ and find out what range of processors the board could tolerate/run ... in addition, perhaps see if there is some firmware upgrade available that might allow you to utilize a more powerful processor.

However, another thing you should check is whether there was any other damage...an overheated CPU may have caused some "collateral" damage to the board itself too.

Yeah it's a drag....I cooked an old socket A Athlon way back just booting it to see if it posted without the HSF on it. Never thought it could possibly cook THAT FAST! Sure nuff....fried :( That teached me reeeel good!

As someone else said, it's an original socket A duron 700, manufactured the 11 week of 2001, and yes you can use a different/better cpu. You can actually use any socket A cpu, but what you will get depends on the MB you have. You may also need a new cooler if you go with one a lot faster. There's lot's of info here;
