Who here wants a Sammy DLP, but is skipping the Power Buy?

1861 Views 27 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  JimP
For a few months I've been convinced that a DLP TV is the right choice for me. Along with many others I've been waiting for details on the HLP sets and the Power Buy to emerge. However, now that the Power Buy is here, I've decided to skip it and wait for the 56" set with the HD2+ chip (HLP5674).

This was a hard choice as there is no guarantee that there will be another Power Buy on the HLP series sets. However, I feel the benefits of waiting outweigh potentially having to pay more. In particular, I'm waiting because. . .

1. 4th generation light engine

2. higher contrast ratio

3. newer chip

4. built in HD tuner

5. thinner bezel (gives appearance that the screen is larger)

Is anyone else doing the same?

I view it a little differently than most I guess. I'm not "skipping" the power buy...just waiting for the next one. Of course there is no guarantee there will be another one, but I'd be willing to wager a large sum of my beer money that there will indeed be a PowerBuy for the HD2+ sets...once TVA has enough info from Sammy to confirm prices and shipping dates. Besides, I'll wait 2 months for more details and can always jump in on the current deal if I'm tired of waiting or the situation with the HD2+ sets change at all.

Ditto here. Either going to wait on a HD2+ chip PowerBuy or the xHD3 version hopefully this November.

It will be funny though to see how many people will trade in/sell their newly aquired HD3 chip PowerBuy DLP's for the new xHD3's and HD2+'s that will surely come to be available.
I'm with you guys. All things considered, the 56" HD2+ set seems to be the right choice for my first jump into the world of HDTV. Sure, I'd love to get a set sooner so I'd be guaranteed to be up-and-running for all of football season... but I also don't mind waiting to get exactly what I want.

I'm also pretty confident that TVA will have a PowerBuy for the HD2+ sets once they get all the necessary information from Samsung. And since there was overwhelming interest in the HD2+ sets in the old "Who's up for a Power Buy" thread, perhaps TVA can sweeten the pot a bit because of the increased sales volume they'll likely get on those models.

Here's hoping!
I am skipping because my current set is only 2.5 years old and the Little woman gives me "That" look everytime I suggest we get a new TV.
I'm skipping because I got a better deal. ;)

Course, I also work for a major retailer and get a nice employee discount.

But that's besides the point. :D

Which also means, by the way, that Best Buy now has the 5063. (not sure about the 46" one though) Apparently they have them in the back of the store I work at, didn't go look because I was too busy setting up delivery for one from our main warehouse :D It should be coming in on Monday. Yay!
No sign of them at my local BB. The sales guy this weekend was pushing the HLN as the best thing out there and just about had this couple convinced to take a 50" when I decided to inform them that the next generation HLP sets would be shipping within a couple weeks (and that they should NEVER pay what the tag says at BB and CC). The sales guy was either playing dumb or really was clueless cause he didn't know about the new line. It's really painful to see people get fed inaccurate info at these stores. I wanted to stay all day just to help peopple make more informed decisions and correct the sales staff.

Hmm, apparently not all the stores have gotten rid of the old sets, then. Although some of the employees genuinely don't know about the new line... I think I was the first person to find out at my store, and I don't even work in the Home Theater department... I actually found out about em from a guy I used to work with who switched stores... I was about ready to buy the HLN but he told me to hold off and showed me the SKUs for the new ones in our inventory system... so I waited. So it depends... some of the sales guys know, some of them don't. Samsung still has no info for the sets on their website, so I'm not all that surprised. Maybe they'll announce the new DLPs at our next meeting.
My brother just skipped the Power Buy.

He had bought a 507W at BB at a very good price but was disappointed in the PQ, even w/ a DVI DTV Sat Receiver (Samsung, I believe).

He was complaining the "near" items in a picture were clear, but "farther back" areas were blurry...depth of field issue basically, on all channels (even SD).

I told him there had to be an issue w/ the set...take it back and get in on the powerbuy here...

So he drove it back in to BB today...and they had one HLP50 in stock, took another $100 off him and away he went...after a quick phone call to me.

Unfortunately, he lives 4 states away, so I can't see it myself for some time. He should be home by now hooking it up...

I didn't even know they had shipped any of the HLP's yet...

I'm Skipping........ ( all the way to the nearest bar ) :D

Warranty is not valid here in Canada......... bummer

Have to pay big bucks, 15% taxes here, & prob. have to wait longer than I expected........ Still getting a HLP tho....

Regards.........
I am waiting for the xHD3 1080p sets as well. Since I've owned a HLM set for over a year it is easy for me to wait.
We're moving soon to an apartment while our house is being built. Since the house may be finished in October, that should be perfect timing for the HD2+ sets! :)

I skipped the power buy long ago. I couldn't wait and just had to have an HLN set.

I don't regret my purchase. Love the TV.
I too am waiting for the HD2+. My mind could still change though when they get some HLPs set up in my local store and I get an oppurtunity to take a look
how much you wanna bet 95% of tv viewers won't be able to see any difference in PQ between these 2 sets... but you wallet sure will. Go ahead and wait, and wait, and wait some more, because there will always be something new coming out... like a carrot being dangled in front of your face... but be prepared, your wallet will pay dearly.

I have a MSRP at $3999 for the HLP5663W (base version) and $4499 for the HLP5674W (HD2+ version) and $3399 for the HLP4663W (base) and $3799 for the HLP4674W, a difference of $500 and $400. Those model numbers are wrong because of the inclusion of the integrated tuner, but you get the idea. It's only the weird captain kirk model (HLP5685W) that is $1000 more than the base 56 inch model. Plus after the new sets come out they wont have anything new coming out for like a year at least. I'd swing 500 bucks on a $3000 TV.
