why all the fuss about Jurassic Park?

i'm just curious why everybody is so hyped up about the possibility of JP coming to hd dvd.

In terms of PQ and CGI and all the eye candy, sure its good in those aspects, but it's essentially the same movie as King Kong(i will be the first to admit the whole middle part of KK on the island was a complete ripoff of JP) and i dunno if a movie thats almost 15 years old is going to look any better than KK or the other tier 0 movies currently available.

in terms of the actual movie itself, its above average, but not great, and definately nowhere close to other Spielberg works such as Jaws, ET, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, indiana jones, etc.

JP is a good popcorn flick, but after reading the book, the movie seemed like somewhat of a letdown. imho, JP isnt even as entertaining as Independence Day, or any of the James Cameron action movies.

oh well, i guess ill get flamed now

don't worry, I've never been a fan of JP. it came out during I time where I absolutely despised blockbuster movies (not that I have changed much in the past 15 years
)

JP, Speed, Forrest Gump, Titanic are all examples of movie that I had/have no interest in watching. now, it's all these damn superhero movies that are erking me!!!

The original movie was original in it's concept, although poorly executed IMO. Still enjoyable though. The CGI was great at the time, but looking at it now, some scenes do not hold up very well. I imagine the HD versions will further expose the dated CGI.

It would still sell well in HD I think.

I would love to see Saving Private Ryan, Indy movies, and Schindler's list in HD though

JP has the advantage in that it utilized such advantages in CGI for the first time in the way that it did. For those of us that appreciate and remember the experience of watching it for the first time in theaters, its makes the anticipation of its release in HD even more demanding. I understand where you are coming from, but if we were to adhere to your logic about outdated CGI, then none of us would ever watch the original Star Wars trilogy because its effects are obviously outdated.
I remember seeing it for the first time and being amazed at how real the dinosaurs looked. It was a major leap forward for CG at the time.

IMHO the movie as a whole is great, and I will even watch bits when it comes on TV.

Getting it in HD would be great.

So was the original version of KK a rip-off of JP, too, since it had similar scenes? I wasn't aware they could see that far into the future, let alone at all.

but my point was that JP wasnt even a good movie, whereas the Star Wars trilogy is an all time classic. sure Star Wars movies(the original 3) might not have won any Best Picture awards, but they are a helluva lot better than JP. even Jaws, which is basically of the same formula of JP, is a much better movie.

im referring to the the brontosauras and raptor chase in peter jackson's king kong that were ripped straight from JP. i didnt notice that in the 1930's KK, did you ?
I'd like to hear a T-Rex's roar !!! JP would make a great addition to my HD collection.

No flames... but keep in mind that everything I've quoted is just your opinion. And others may disagree.

I'd watch JP about 100 times in a row before I'd sit through ID4 again once, just as an example.

Anyway, in answer to your thread title question, if people are making a "fuss" over JP (and I'm not sure they are), it's because it's a popular film that is well-liked. It's #12 on the all-time B.O. list (#17 on the adjusted one... which is pretty damn impressive). It's spawned 2 (soon to be 3) sequels. And is just a generally sucessful film that is likely to look (and sound) great in HD. So people are looking forward to it.

I don't think there's much else to say. People are probably looking forward to ID4 too... even though I personally can't understand the appeal of that film.

Jurassic Park was the first film to feature DTS, wasn't it? That might be one reason people like it, and look forward to a lossless soundtrack?

That's your subjective opinion. Mine differs. I think JP is a great movie.
Fun film, simple enough. I'd buy it. I recall using that "ripples in the puddle" scene as my first really cool sub workout...and this was on VHS.

i guess what i was trying to say is that the appeal of the movie at the time was the cgi and how it was the first big computer generated blockbuster, but the movie itself wasnt that great, and now since its almost 15 yrs old, other movies have came along with much more impressive visual effects.

regarding the audio, i had a feeling that was a major reason, as i believe DTS was created for this movie, correct?

all this negativity from me and im sure ill still buy it when it comes out, but no way in hell do i get JP2 or JP3
People want to complain about Bass levels again...

Well said. Love it and many people do as well. And I mean MANY. The story is very well executed as well. I'd love the three set package on HD DVD. So let's get it on Universal.
The T-rex scene in the rain still holds up. It looks really natural.

If they do a nice HD transfer of it, it would be worth purchasing just as a demo disc.
Indeed. The T-Rex scene still looks better than almost everything that's come since.

I remember reading a review that stated complaining about Jurassic Park is like getting off the most amazing rollercoaster ever and then bitching about the color of the car.

At the time it was phenomenal, jaw dropping. Opening nite and having fully grown adults screaming at a "fake" dinosaur was priceless. It was a thrill ride and it worked perfectly.

And yes, I'd rather watch JP then sit through the muppet show and Harrison Ford sleepwalking through his part that is ROTJ...

One of my all time favorite scenes in a home theater IMO. The sequel sucked (as did the book) and I never wasted my time with the third one but who knows. The first one is and always will be a classic to me.

Comparing it to ID4 is ridiculous IMO. That might have been the most overhyped movie of all time. Terrible acting along with a boaring plotline and the most rediculous character arcs in any movie I have ever scene.
