was looking at the 42" 7UY panny. . .stumbled across the NEC 42" commercial EDTV. model #PX-42VP4

i almost never see these plasma's referenced here. this looks like a great set. guy i spoke to at one of the on-line dealers said it was hands down better than the panny. just curious if anyone has seen this set/has any comments.

I'm not 100% positive if that NEC is identical to my Daewoo 42SM.

I painted the bezel black (see gallery), and had to take it all apart, to find out everything inside was NEC, all the control boards, all the chips, and it had a NEC model and serial with "NEC Plasma Corporation" on a nameplate.

What I can 100% say with confidence is my plasma is made by NEC, and it's amazing.! Blows away my previous Sampo 42S6.

My friend has an HD Pioneer 43...I truly believe my colors and contrast are better.

Damn, the SportsCenter studio colors are jaw dropping (the aqua blues of the background studio)

You can see the screen door if you get on top of mine...but I don't stand there watching TV, I sit on my couch 13' away...and it's simply beautiful.

The other thing I can say...is if I was ever in the market for another (sold this one...or wanted 50") I'd purchace an NEC.

I've never seen a Panny set-up properly in a home (just stores)...but the colors seem dimmer, where the NEC colors pop off the screen.

A High End store here in Atlanta that I buy stuff from sells NEC Plasmas. They are always set up in the store and they always look GREAT. Both with HD material and SD material.

They sell McIntosh, NAD, etc. He says he carries the NEC plasmas because they look the best (picture) and are the easiest to set up, work with and use.

They also have a ton of inputs.

I am considering an NEC HD 42"er.

Two+ years ago I bought an NEC 42, loved it. Just upgraded to a Marantz 61" which is the NEC electronics.

I love the NEC lines. With an HD image, wow. I am loving football season.

NEC actually makes a large % of all the plasmas sold. They just resell them and let others brand them. I know for a fact Marantz are the NEC, hell, i didn't even have to change the macros on my pronto, all the IR codes are the same. hehe.

I would hazard to guess that you don't see many posts, because they don't sell many retail plasmas. I know that they had a decent chunk of the business plasma market - because they concentrated their marketing there. If you look at NEC's websites you will find they are a very large company but they mostly make products oriented to other businesses.

Now that they've sold the plasma division to Pioneer - who knows what that means?

As for retailing, over the last year I've been to at least 15 different stores in southeastern Michigan from high end specialty - down to Sears, and I've yet to see an NEC plasma. Somehow I don't think their stealth retail plan works very well in the consumer markets.

That said - most of the reviews I've read regarding their product line(s) have been mostly very positive.

I've had the NEC 42XM2/s for the better part of the year and love it. The colors are great. The scaler is good (not as good, however, as the Fujitsu). There is lots of ability to dial in a great picture. The only weakness vis-a-vis the Panasonic line, is that the absolute black level is not nearly as good (but in a room with minimal ambient light -- as opposed to pitch black -- its not really an issue). Only very rarely is there false contouring.

Overall, I'm very happy & my wife thinks its the greatest thing we've ever bought [[got rid of a big box, and now have a big widescreen picture hanging on the wall]].

For a consumer version (built-in speakers, etc.), you might want to try the Toshiba which uses NEC glass to good effect & has a nice overall package. Good luck.
