I want to connect my HTPC to an LCD front projector (xga), but I don't understand why I need custom resolution; because the manual of the projector says that "if the display resolution doesn't match the indicated resolution (640x400, 640x480, 800x600, 832x624, 1024x768) the input signal will be converted to 1024x768".

So why should i use a resolution of(for example)1280x720 or 1024x576 (16:9)if the projector then downscale the signal to 1024x768 ?

The quality of your projectors scalar (converter) is much poorer (cheaper) than a HTPC. Plus your projectors scalar probably dose not do 3:2 film to video pulldown. On the other hand a HTPC has a lot more horsepower to do a superior job. You should always bypass your projectors internal scalier by sending it a native resolution picture.
