When i was in a local audio-video place in Prague, i was amazed at all the 16:9 sets they had. Is it only for DVD viewing since there is no HDTV coming in the foreseable future in Europe? Any Europeans want to comment?
There is no HDTV transmission in Europe at this time. 16:9 TVs have been showing up because soccer is being broadcast in this format to show more of the field. Of course, the same thing could be done here even without HD, but except for a few lame NBC "widescreen" shows, no one is doing it.
Although there is no HDTV in Europe, programming is now being produced in 16:9 format for regular PAL transmissions - certainly in the UK, most BBC programs have been in 16:9 for the past couple of years, and I believe the other channels ITV, Ch 4 and Ch 5 are also not far behind.
