I went to Best Buy today and checked out the DVD-Audio selection. I noticed that a lot of them say "Works on ALL DVD players", which I believe may be untrue. I'm sure the video portion works, but the DVD-A portion might not. For example, my Panasonic RP56 doesn't play DVD-A discs.

All DVD-Audio discs should have a Dolby Digital mix which will play on all DVD-Video players.


It won't be the high resoultion DVD-Audio track, but at least it works.

Generally I think they have a small print disclaimer on the package that you must have a DVD Audio player to play the advanced resolution audio tracks.


So, not really a lie, just a stretch of the truth with a disclaimer.

If it states that, then a DVDV track is included. Thus it will play, just not the DVDA portion of the DVD. Same music, mostly the same mix (i.e. what sounds come from what speakers.) They are not lying.

It ain't a lie since they typically include a DD, DTS, and/or high res PCM track on the DVD-V layer. I don't own a DVD-A player, yet I have 10 DVD-A discs. If they didn't work, I wouldn't keep buying them.
