Also posted this on the HTPC forum.

DVD player: optical audio signal direct to input on Denon AVR 2700.

HTPC: digital audio signal passed out of ATI Radeon 7500 into SBLive DD5.1 and directly out again via S/Pdif to Denon AVR 2700. Setting in SBlive to 'digital output only', all mute buttons 'off and volume sliders at max.

For HTPC I usually have to increase the volume by 30-50% above the setting for the DVD player to achieve about the same level of sound.

I am thinking there is a blockage somewhere - a volume control I haven't reset? Am I damaging my 2700?

Any ideas? Thanks for replies.

I suspect in one case you are getting the Dolby Digital bitstream directly, and the other case a PCM of the decoded signal. If you were getting the DD bitstream in both cases (from the same soundtrack on the disc) they would indeed be identical.
