When I put a CD in my Drive (Samsung 52X) and put my headphones on, I hear the actual spinning of the CD in my ear. It's faint, but it's there, and it sounds sort of electric. Note: when I decrease Windows Volume Control, the spinning sound goes away gradually... but so does the main volume!!

What's the problem? Is it going to be the same when I'm done builing my HTPC? With my DVD drive I mean...?

Thanks.

Are you using the analog audio cable from the CD-ROM to your sound card? If so, remove it and switch to a player that uses D.A.E. (Digital Audio Extraction) so you're not using the very low quality DACs in the CD-ROM.

If you are using D.A.E. and you're still hearing the whirr, you either have a weak / poorly filtered power supply or maybe you have some unused inputs (mic, line in, aux, etc.) unmuted, mute any you are not using.
