Why is Canadian TV not available in the US?

1048 Views 13 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  zaphod7501
I have wondered this for a long time. In Canada, US channels are available to cable and DBS subs. In the US it seems that we can get TV from virtually any country and in any language except Canada. MY GOD we can get friggin' Al Jazeera but the CBC, NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Terrorist TV but no Hockey Night in Canada(without CI sub).

Terrorist state but not the Fifth Estate.

WTF????

Different rules / companied providing the content. Also diferent agreements.
Teh Canadians have lots of rules about that...I'm sure some of the rules are on our side of the border as well, but they have some really strange agreements from what I have read....you could probably find some if googled it.
At least a part of it is because commercial Canadian networks air a lot of U.S. programming in prime time hours (and otherwise). There's no way the U.S. networks would let CTV or Global come in back into the U.S. during prime time with the same shows.

As for CBC, there may just not be enough U.S. demand for satellite services or cable companies to import it. CBC's main radio service, Radio One, does show up on Sirius Satellite Radio (even in the U.S.), but that's mostly an adjunct of Sirius starting up a Canadian subsidiary.
I would pay for the CBC. Hell, D* charges >$30 for 3 or 4 chinese channels.

I would pay $10 or $12 for the CBC.

I don't know how much I'd pay, but I might pay that much. You and I wouldn't have many other takers among us, though. :D

The Asian-oriented channels are HUGELY popular, due to immigrants and others connecting with their roots. The market for an English-language North American service wouldn't be as big.
I get CBC on Comcast cable in Seattle, not in HD yet though. I would get satellite tv if they carried it too.
I would rather watch a snowy analog OTA picture from the CBC than watch this CRAP that OLN is putting out for the NHL Playoffs.

I think you'll need a pretty big antenna to receive CBC OTA in the Dallas area

:D
I receive thease stations from BC on Comcast cable in my area.

CIVT CTV British Columbia

CBUT CBC British Columbia

and

KVOS who says they are a local channel, their transmitter is in USA and they have an office here but their business office is in British Columbia and most of their commercials are from BC.

IIRC, CTV,(other than hockey) shows rebugged American TV shows.

CTV does not show hockey. CBC-HD has shown all (i think) the games played in Canada in HD. Do you guys get any World Hockey Championship on any stations?

I guess the grass is always greener as what I would like to see in Canada is ESPN.
Personally, I'd like to see "Space". They actually have science fiction as opposed to the US horror channel called "SciFi"; of course that's a cable channel and not an OTA broadcast station.

Obviously, no chance, since their programming often predates the US presentation of many shows by several months. We'd have also seen shows like Charlie Jade and the Collector as well as some TV series in their entirety when the US presenters cancelled them midseason (like Jeremiah and Century City).

But CBC has DrWho.
