Ok, after 10 pages of posts, I can't seem to find the most basic info...which makes me feel stupid
Maybe this should be a sticky for people like me! I'm trying to play back my 1080i files (I just downloaded straight from the camcorder and want to play them) on my PC and they are ch-ch-ch-chop-p-py. In big/bad way. Thing is, I have a quad core CPU a fairly high end video card and 4 gigs of RAM. Is this just the way it is? Or, do I need better software to playback the files smoothly? I'm currently using VLC.

Might wanna start by outlining the camcorder used, codec used (if you know) and what type of files they are. The grahpics card type might be helpful.

I have the HF100, the codec is AVC (as in AVCHD) and the file extension is M2TS.

On my system (Duo quad, 4Gb, SATA, 512Mb ePCI, XP Pro), these will play in full screen very well from within Pixela (the transfer program). They will also play in Nero 8 (showtime 4 I think) very well too.

Give us a clue, and we'll give you some advice....

Thanks...I was a bit vague because my friend has the same issue (different setup). I'm using an HDR-SR11 on the highest video setting. The files are mt2s if I'm not mistaken. The video card is an ATI 4850 (512mb). I'm on Vista 32-bit w/ 4gigs RAM. The CPU is a Q6600 (quad core 2.4ghz).

I'm not using the supplied software to transfer...I'm simply connecting it as a drive and copying the files to my PC. Then running them within VLC. But, they chop. It will actually only update the video every 10 or so seconds. I'll get about 1 or 2 seconds of smooth play, then it pretty much halts or chops for a second and won't update for a bit.

The sound is fine.

My friend just got a Canon HG20 and is having the same problem on a relatively new PC (though I don't know his details).

Only thing I know is that he's using the highest setting on the camcorder also (1080i)...not sure what codec that is (whatever is native to the camcorder).

I have trouble when I play my files with VLC too (Q6600, 3GB RAM).

Ah man, when my Windows Media player started having problems with certain video files, I switched to VLC thinking it was the shizzle...now, to find out it may not be what I thought it was.

I feel so let down

Thanks for the responsees everyone. I will try different software tonight. And let my friend know the same.

vlc is fully compatible with avchd, but it's not an accelerated media player like nero showtime is.

if you don't want to pay the price for nero, you can get the coreavc pro codec for $14.95, and install it in a number of different media players.

http://www.coreavc.com/index.php?opt...d=21&Itemid=59

those two options will play 24Mbps avchd back smoothly on core2duo cpu computers... remember that avchd playback is depends on the cpu for decoding, not the video card, unless you have one of the above codecs/players.

I can't seem to win. Installed the Vista codec package and the video now runs great on Windows Media Player. But, the audio doesn't sync well

i checked my setup and when playing avchd (m2ts) files, the video decoder is listed as ffdshow Video Decoder and the audio decoder is AC3Filter. Is that what you're seeing? If not, maybe that's an issue.

Er...how do I check this? Looked in dxdiag, but didn't find it.

Oops, hang on...Audio codec is showing as ffdshow. I don't see ffdshow in add/remove programs. Do you know how to get rid of it (or simply change the audio codec used)?

i checked to see if AC3Filter was included in the codec package and it is. from the info below (copied from http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?...c=66826&st=540 ) it may describe what happened with you. did you custom install?

A complete install will set AC3Filter as the default AC3 decoder where-as a custom install sets ffdshow as the default AC3 decoder. Just curious if your issue may be audio related.

in any case, you could uninstall and reinstall "complete" as one option. or if you have a program that can set filter merits, like radlight filter manager, you may be able to change it yourself.

Ok, reinstalled the Vista Codec Package and it didn't help. Tried installing an AC3 filter codec on it's own as well, and it listed as using the AC3 codec during playback, but the audio was still out of sync.

Tried installing the XP codec package and while the files wouldn't recognize and play in WMP, it would play in WMP Classic and it worked perfectly. Not sure what gives...

It feels kind of shoddy to have a "Classic" install working better than a native Vista install
But, at least I can watch my videos. I need to figure something out, though.
