Why isn't JVC an LCD player?

2577 Views 16 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  davegow
This is probably a really stupid question, but I'll throw it out anyway.

Whenever I see a shoot-out of projectors, a JVC is at or near the top. Whenever JVC introduces a new projector, it seems to set a new standard for contrast ratio.

JVC LCD flatpanals are pretty much a non-factor, virtually never mentioned anywhere.

Does the projector technology just not translate to flatpanals, does JVC just choose to be a big fish in the projector pond and put minimal effort into the LCD market, or are JVC's flatpanals made by some other company?

Just wondering. Thanks

JVC contracts panels from various manufactures (especially from LG). Toshiba and Sony also contract panels from wide range of OEM suppliers.
I think that JVC got such cold feet from their LCOS RPTV experience that they decided to give up.
I used to have an old JVC flat screen tube (early part of iArt series) that, while no reference monitor, produced an excellent picture for the price. I'm always a bit puzzled why they haven't done better/chose to make a bigger impact on the LCD market.

Too bad..
At one time JVC was mostly owned by Matsushita and was a sister company to Panasonic. JVC made some of the best tube TVs for over 20 years, and their last 34" HD Tube TV (the 1500i model AV-34WP84) outperformed the reference Sony XBR series in most categories. After that, they made some pretty nice Plasmas then moved into the LCD market and made some very good sets. Matsushita apparently sold their shares in JVC and they haven't been the same since.
The JVC projectors are the Pioneer Kuro's of the projector world. Outside of that you hardly hear anything about JVC anymore.
I really don't think it matters. Not every company has to get big into every technology. If they want to focus on pjs then let them. There are plenty of other options out there for lcd and plasma to worry about why they aren't around.

They did. Pioneer only has one projector(Pioneer FPJ1 ala JVC RS2) and they had a fire sale on those when the word came out they were getting out of the display business. I sold my Pioneer 6020 and got a Samsung LCD and the Pioneer projector for movies. I'm glad they got out of the projector business since I got a good deal on one.

I've got a 5-year old 52 inch 720p JVC rear-projection set. I'm retired and have a bad habit of leaving it on all day whether I'm watching it or not, so it has something like 20,000 hours on it. It works like the day I got it, so not all LCoS sets are junk. The PQ was top notch 5 years ago but the technology has moved on so it's just OK now.

But I understand why RP died. Every year and a half I have to buy a new $300 lamp. If there's dust or smoke in the air I have turn it off to keep the inside clean. More than once I've had to open it up and remove a beastie and associate webs. I have to make sure it doesn't suddenly lose power or the lamp will overheat and break. It sticks 18 inches out into the room.

I plan to replace it later this year with one of the new lines of 60 inch LED sets recently announced. Looking forward to it, but really the old TV was everything that JVC promised so I can't complain.

As to why JVC isn't a current player in LCD, I understand that they are a much bigger factor in their home Japanese market but just decided that foreign markets weren't worth it.

I think that this goes back to where you market your sets.

You will notice that you can't find a JVC LCD in a BB. They really only sell Samsung and Sony now with a small selection of Toshiba, maybe one Sharp model and the store brand Insignia.

If you asked me where to find a JVC locally where I am, I would not even know.

The problem with this is that JVC may be better than most of the stuff out there, but we will never see one, much less have the oportunity to buy one.

IMO megachains like BB have really done the consumer a diservice by reducing our choice to what THEY carry. Mom and Pop stores that used to sell items like this have been driven out by them and we all suffer.

In my area, there's a store that carries JVC LCD tv sets. The JVC LT-32P679 is a 32" set. There's no mention of a tv tuner for this model. The store has separate JVC tv tuners that you can buy. The 46" model is the LT-46P300. This does have a QAM and ATSC tuner. It looks like a boutique tv set and sells at a very high price. Almost as much as what I paid for my Elite Pro-101FD.
That sounds like a commercial grade monitor for use in studios etc. They cost so much because of exceptional video precision in color, motion control and other factors. They are not for home use.

The commercial grade JVC LCD that Gibby sells is the LT-42SWX70. It's a 42" monitor and has a leather bezel. It costs 3 grand! The 46P300 is $2000 and it an HDTV.

Care to elaborate?
JVC is an OK company that's gone through some reorganization recently. Oddie55 is known for unsubstantiated statements.
