I had a Sony DAV FC7 stereo system and the receiver stopped work so I decided to start buying a real stereo system. I bought a Yamaha RX-V673 and was going to keep using the old speakers from the sony system while I researched speakers. (I've settled on a PSB alpha setup, I think, once I make sure the receiver is working.)

So the problem I'm having is I bought a speaker wire to RCA adapter to get the sony subwoofer to work for the time being and for some reason the subwoofer is not working. I've done the tonal test built into the receiver and I can't get noise to come out of the subwoofer. I've tried both the 1 and 2 subwoofer output and the on screen is saying it's sending sound to the subwoofer but no noise comes out.

Any ideas? Can I just hook up a spare satellite speaker up to the RCA cables to make sure that the receiver works? is there a setting that I perhaps just didn't find in the manual?

Thanks for the help!

PS- sorry for my lack of knowledge, I'm slowly wadding into the home theater type world

Since that's a Home Theater in a Box combo the amp for the sub was probably built into the Sony receiver. The Yamaha receiver doesn't have a sub amp.
