Having recently been blown away by a 3-chip DLP presentation, I now know what my dream projector is. Unfortunately, they appear to start at around $40K. The explanation I've heard so far of why they're so expensive is that the DLP chips themselves are just expensive, and putting in two more ups the price quickly. Which almost makes sense...


Given that there seem to be a lot of people who are happy with $3000 DLPs, I wonder if anyone's considered a hack of stacking three of 'em and using one for R, one for G, one for B.


Or, more realistically, couldn't a manufacturer use the same components + the kind of prisms used in every LCD projector, to make a 3-chip DLP for under $10K? Understood the resolution would be lower than the $40K units, but still...


Just a thought.
