Why not wireless?

I hope to build a house in the next 12 months so I've been looking at home control (climate, lights, audio) options. It would seem that a wireless system would be the ideal solution to avoid the expense and hassle of running a huge amount of wiring which may become obsolete down the road. Of course if a wireless solution performs poorly or unreliably compared to a wired system then the expense/hassle may be worth it. I've seen a couple systems mentioned, the Lutron (Radio Ra?) which seems VERY nice and I'm assuming is very costly, and Insteon which seems much less expensive but doesn't offer all the asthetic options (though may perform capably). Any opinions welcome, and thanks in advance-Tim.

I'm no pro, but I'll take a crack at it:

1) More expensive (particularly if you're building a house and have no walls to deal with). I don't think wiring is more expensive at all.

2) Less reliable - we've all had cell phones drop calls, heard static on a cordless phone. Granted wireless systems are approaching the reliablility of hard-wired systems, but in my mind you can't beat good old fashioned copper.

Wireless is great as a supplemental and support platform, but I wouldn't do a complete system as wireless. Any entirely wireless solution that is actually rock solid and performs flawlessly would end up being just as expensive as a wired solution.

â€System†encompasses a lot of things. What exactly are you considering on doing wirelessly?

once you define your reliability needs, bandwidth needs, and susceptibility to interference (phones, microwaves, etc.) it should be pretty easy to pick wired or wireless.

for audio, wireless seems to be able to compete in the bandwidth department now. video is still pushing the limits of wireless right now, from the real world experiences I've read on here.
Thanks for the feedback, to clarify a bit on what I envision in a system, I'd like to control heating (zones- manual and auto on-off), lighting (on-wall control pads as well as IR/RF light switches for individual control via manual or remote, with some pre-configured "scenes" for various areas around house, auto irrigation, audio distribution (4-5 zones). I don't see doing video as it seems to significantly add to the complication of set-up and distribution. Being able to configure on a PC software program would seem to be the easiest. I have also been to the HomeLogic site which seems to offer some good solutions (seemingly mostly wired with some wireless capability), haven't seen any discussion of the costs of involved with this system. Thanks again for the replies.
check out control4. I am in the same boat, I have a retro fit that I want to do and would liek to run as little wires as possible. Besides Video and some speaker wire...most of it can be done wirelessly. I am looking into them now...however...you have to get installed by a dealer and I am a more DIY'er. I am looking at the cinemar / HTPC solution. Not real sure what I am going to do yet.
My question to the OP is... if you are building a home, why not go wired? Wireless is inferior in so many ways and is usually a solution where wired cannot be accomplished, is too costly, or mobility is a requirement. If you are building a home you are prime for running wire since you can easily run through the jousts and studs before the drywall is put into place.
I would look at Control4 ( http://www.control4.com/ ) for your house. It will do everything you want to do and then some. It has Wireless Lighting Control, Whole House Audio Distribution (with optional Hard Drive for mp3's), Audio/Video/ Home Theater Control, Heating and Air Conditioning Control and can even interface with Security Systems.

I hope this helps,

Rob
