I am currently using an 8 year old Panasonic 31" CRT direct view TV. The TV is in a room with double glass sliding doors, covered by shear curtains. In other words, during the day, a lot of light gets in and the TV is practically a mirror.

Now the good news - I talked my wife into getting a TV to compensate for the glare rather than doing something about the curtains. So my question is, will a DLP eliminate or significantly improve my glare problem and allow me to enjoy TV during daylight hours? This is the centerpiece of my home theater. I am looking at the Samsung models, and may get in on the AVS Powerbuy if possible. Thanks!!!

If the DLP or LCD TV has an anti glare screen then your glare problem will be helped.

RCA, Loewe, and Sony all make DLP or LCD sets with high glare glass screens. Sony and RCA also make models with anti glare screens.

A lot of Samsung owners like their anti glare screens.

The Samsungs do handle reflections pretty well, you never will see "reflections" - just areas of light in the worst cases. In general, the DLPs do well in brightly lit rooms.

But there are limits to the ability of any screen to cut down on glare. *After* you get your TV (sounds like you married well, my friend) consider putting a second set of more opaque curtains on the wondow; you can close it only when you need to.

I absolutely detest seeing reflections in a TV screen. Half the time I listen to music, and sitting in front of what is virtually a mirror isn't really a relaxing way to listen.

So you're saying that while manufacturers who make glass screens would be a bad option, an anti-glare screen would make a significant improvement, and that the HLN series from Samsung has an anti-glare screen? Thanks again.

Yes and Samsung "may" have a "better" anti glare screen in the new models.

I second the thought on the Samsung HLN having a good anti-glare screen. I have 2 windows directly behind my seating area that I like to open up on a nice day, and also a reading light that shines over my shoulder (towards the screen) when I'm reading. I've never seen a reflection in the screen from either of these, just a "lighter" spot where the light strikes it which is to be expected. Maybe I'm just used to highly reflective screens but I find it remarkable.

I gotta say the best thing about the HLN is the anti-glare screen. My old CRT used to be nearly unusable during the day due to nearly direct sunlight hitting the screen, but the HLN has no problems at all.

Thanks for everyone's replies so far - more amunition for my wife (just in case she changes her mind) that we're better off getting a new TV, which I want anyway, than wasting money replacing or changing curtains that she's happy with. :)
