Will a Grado Cartridge fit?

1857 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  bakerman
I currently own a Technics SL-3300 TT. I need to get a new cartridge for it and have read good things about Grado's. They seem to be reasonable and I really wanted to upgrade from my old Shure Cart.

My question is will it fit my tonearm head? It is the typical screw on Technics type head. I cannot find the answer anywhere. Is there an adapter I need ?

Apology to all who find these questions silly. But I need to know

Might be rude of me to chime in because I don't know the answer to my own statement but...

It is 99.9% that the cartridge will fit, but you aren't really asking the right question. The right question would be is the compliance of the cartridge correct for the mass of the arm and is the output of the cartridge correct for the EQ and gain of your phono preamp or step up transformer. Unfortunately that is what I can't help you with because I know nothing about that TT.
It'll fit. The only concern is that Grados can develop a hum with certain tables. I don't think it'd be a problem with yours, but you might want to pose the question in a more vinyl-oriented forum than this one.

As for compliance, that's less of an issue these days because high mass/low compliance has become the de facto standard. If your table has an ultra low mass arm, you might want to investigate proper cartridge matching further. But I don't think Technics was ever big on low-mass arms.

Thanks for the info. Now how does one determine a "low mass arm" and or compliance? Seems to me this is the forum to ask.

I'm thinking of a GRADO blue or black if someone knows a better one for under $80.00 please help me out

I have a Grado black mated with a Stanto table and I think it sounds pretty nice. I had some troubles with Hum, but, then found it was my pre-amp, that got upgraded, no more hum and everything souds much better.

Hi,

When all setup, I think you are going to like this cartridge, especially for the price.

If the bass seems a little too full, optimum loading of approx 11.5k ohms should help for optimum bass, response in general. But it may not be necessary.

Since the phono stage is already setup for, I assume 47k, if you can connect a 15k across the inputs, that should give you 11.3k. If the bass is too light, just install a higher value resistor.

Hope this helps.

Oh yeah I am getting a Cambridge Audio 640P phono preamplifier. My Yammy 663 doesn't have a phono input. I figured this would sound better in the long run.
