Will a Voodoo3 16m cut it for HTPC?

254 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Goi
I am going to build a HTPC and want to use what kit I have from an old computer. I have a Voodoo 3 16meg with TV out.

Will this be ok for output to my TV (PAL)?

I will want to play DVD's as well and since it has no hardware stuff for DVD's will I need a very powerful CPU? AMD 1800's are quite cheap so it will probably be at least that.

Yes it should be ok provided your motherboard supports it. The Voodoo3 is an AGP2X board I believe and it accepts only AGP3.3V. Many newer motherboards that support AGP8X only provide AGP1.5V and thus your Voodoo3 won't work on those boards. You will need a motherboard that does NOT support AGP8X, i.e. only AGP4X and below. I believe this rules out all the newer boards such as the nforce2 and KT600.
I wasn't going to spend much on the motherboard so I'll keep that in mind - thanks!

anybody know what the minimum CPU speed would be?
You can play DVDs with a basic 1GHz CPU, of even less. However, if you're gonna be rescaling it and applying filters(sharpness, deinterlacing, etc) then you'll probably need a 2+GHz class CPU.
