Will anyone ever make the A2 region free for dvds?

1264 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  alfbinet
I would like to purchase the A2 for $299 with the 7 free HD-Dvds, however I have a sizable collection of PAL television series. Due to that, I'm wavering between buying an Oppo 981-HD instead of the A2. However, as I've heard the A2 is comparable in upscaling capabilities, I would prefer to just purchase the A2 so I have everything in one package. Does anyone know if a hack will be released so the A2 has multi-region capabilities? If one is, then I would have no hesitation jumping on the HD bandwagon, otherwise I'll probably hold off.

However, if there is no chance of the A2 gaining multi-region capabilities, what is the best

I have both an HD DVD player and a cheap region free DVD player.

What is the cost and model of your region free dvd player? Also, how is the PAL-NTSC conversion?

I also have a 971H, but i think it is no longer available. The OPPO 981 will play anything, but you will need a HDMI input on your TV. Both of these can be made region free with a easy hack.

The HD A2, I believe will not play PAL.

You can get the specifications on the OPPO's by going to oppodigital.com.

I am very please with my OPPO.
@ VERY cheap region free players, like under 30 dollars cheap, and really small so they don't take up any room on your rack/self.... could even throw them in a draw!

I have used the cyberhome at a friends, works fine, again, its CHEAP, so ya, not great, but for region free, and burned DVDs its great. I just bought the Coby for 15 dollars shipped off ebay, since I will be getting ride of my Bravo D1 for the HD-A2.

The Oppo 970 replaced the 971 and can be made region free in the menu. It dropped down to $175 shipped now.

I'm not really interested in el cheapo $30 or less dvd players, nor the ~$200 range of the Oppos. Which is a good dvd player which does PAl-NTSC conversion in the $50-100 range?

Luminous is a highly regarded importer, right up there with xploited. I've been ordering from them for years and never had any issues.
I was able to make my Denon 3910 player region free from advice from the Denon forum on the standard DVD thread here at AVS. My understanding is the Denons are very easy to make region free via the remote. If anyone has a Denon check out the Denon threads.

I have heard that even standard Toshiba's are HARD to make region free via remote controls. My Toshiba 3750 sd player (now retired but still works) has been posted on various forums as not being able to be made region free and that was released in 2000 or 2001.
