Do I need a receiver/amp with specific effects/decoding to get 5.1 from avi files with just mp3 audio ? What is the decoding called ? Neo something ? Or does the audio o the file have to be a original 5.1 audio file ?

If the AVI file has two channel MP3 audio will it play through all 5.1 speakers ?

If the AVI file has two channel MP3 audio will it play through all 5.1 speakers like it was a actual 5.1 channel audio file ? Like will gunfire play in the back speakers while people yelling in the center channel and other audio in the front 2 channels and then a crash will go to the sub ? If the MP3 file is only a two channel stereo will the receiver decode it like this to play in certain speakers ? Or would all the audio be mixed in all 5 speakers ?

What decoder does a receiver have to do this ?

Or does the audio HAVE to be a actual original 5.1 audio format ?

At 1:30 he talks about "upconverting" features ??

Yes to your question. There are processing modes like Dolby Pro Logic that will up mix 2 into 5 channel audio. Most if not all receivers have this feature. This only simulates surround sound. It will not be as good as original 5.1 audio.

Neo X processing mode is for when you have 7+ channels/speakers. Higher end receivers have this processing mode.
