I was using Nero Digital AVC profile to encode a 2-hour movie, it took me almost 30 hours on my 3GHz P4. I am wondering if dual processor will speed things up. Anyone with experiences?
It'll only speed up the encoding if your encoder is multithreaded. But you will be able to do more operations in parallel. I had an Athlon MP rig for a while, and I was able to do all my regular computing while encoding, which was pretty nice.
Ditto what nirvdrum said... it takes but one link in the encoding chain to not be multithread capable and it all goes out the window.
Dual processors are great in that while you wait for the file to complete, you can still play games and do whatever else you usually do. If your computing is not as CPU intensive, you can try and set the encoding thread to "Idle" priority and still browse comfortably etc.
