...or a signal from a Iscan scaler of some type?

Never tried it. mostly because I don't have a breakout cable. (The input to my PJ is BNC RGBHV.)

But before purchasing one I want to float this question.

Anyone had any experience with this?

Thanks in advance. =0)

Yes, provided it is done at the RGB level. IOW, you can't output 480p component from a progressive DVD...but from a doubler, outputting RGBHV, no problem.

Currently, I am using an HTPC w/ a VGA > RGBHV breakout cable to scale my DVDs to my PJ's native rate or other acceptable res.

The reason I was asking, was since PCs are so fickle, (for lack of a better term) I was searching for a more simple way to get a similar result in PQ.

I guess not. at least not without shelling out some serious clams.

Thank you. =0)

You can probably get a decent scaler for around $500 (not great, but decent) . Check out that thread. You will have to be careful about what inputs it has, but you might find something suitable if you shop. Alternatively, you may want to look for a DVD player that does VGA out. Surely one must exist...

hardvark,

Is there any particular model iScan that will work better than the others? Sratch that.

What are the differences in features/ benefits vs. cost.

Thanks again in advance. =0)

The only two I've ever played around with are the plus v2 and the Pro. The plus has 2 s-videos and a composite inputs , the Pro has a component, a s-video , and a composite inputs . The Pro also has picture controls ie..color,detail,contrast ,ect.. both look the same picture wise to me the Pro just is a little more flexible to me , Y.O.M.V.

Ok, Im still new so Im curious as to why you want to dump the HTPC for the scaler...
I just recently built my HTPC and I have an ECP 3100. I just did the simple route and stuck XP Pro and Power Dvd on it. My screen resolution is 800x600, but I have power dvd convert 4:3 and 16:9 to 1024x768/47hz and I think it looks great. $20 sound card from best buy sends DTS 5.1 to my receiver through spdif...

So what about the HTPC is fickle?

I will hang my projector this weekend probably... I have a screen shot from when I had my pj setting on the end table and the screen was leaning against the wall... It looks decent IMO.

Sorry Green,

no offense to HTPCers meant, as I have one myself.

I love it. But after all, it is a PC and as we all know PCs are not necessarily the most reliable electronic item around.

The only reasons I am looking for an alternative is:

a. to simplify the operation

b. to create a more uniform look.

c. to increase the dependability at each playback.

...and it actually looks like I may have found the alternative ...and at the right price too.

take a look here....

Just may be what the doctor ordered.

I'm just going to wait until I hear a few more reviews on it. =0)

Juno,

I run an iScan Pro line doubler on my ECP 3000 and it looks great. I'd recommend the Pro model or higher since they have sharpness control, which I run almost at max to get a nice, detailed image. Note that with the iScan Pro, you can only use sharpness on s-video signals, and not component. Side-by-side with an HTPC, I barely see any difference. Plus, I use the iScan for numerous other sources (TV, video game consoles, etc). Worth the money, IMO.
