Will Space Shuttle Return be in HDTV?

2561 Views 29 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  optivity
I am thinking NASA is going to HDTV live video on all shuttle launches to watch for any falling debris. It would be real nice for HDNET or Discovery to show the Space Shuttle return to space flight in Live HDTV. Would NASA share it's live HDTV video with our HDTV programming providers?

Did they do the John Glenn return to space in HDTV a couple years back?

I could have sworn that it was advertised as such(not that many people actually saw it in HDTV I guess...) Maybe it was my imagination.

Yes! On October 29, 1998. This was the first event to kickoff public HDTV broadcasts. In Los Angeles, KTLA provided the HD shots for stores that had the TV and receivers set up. John Glenn's return to space and HDTV's "launch" itself were big news the same day in LA. Sadly, I wasn't at the stores watching as I was in class at the time. =(
NSTV HD would be awesome.
NASA is in the process of converting their video systems at all of the different centers to 1080i HD. It started a couple of years ago. No one has said when there will be a NASA TV HD, but I suspect that isn't too far in the future. NASA being a government agency, unless the activities are of a security nature, NASA has to share with the world what it has. The government can't show favoritism.
It would be cool to see a launch in HD. If NASA is not in HD I wonder who will carry it. What is the next launch date?

The Shuttle Launch in 98 with John Glenn on board was in HD and you still see it sometimes in promos for HD PQ.
this is a c/p from the nasa site

STS-114

Return to Flight Mission

Launch Planning Window: May 12 to June 3 Space Shuttle

Discovery 39B

KSC

If you like HD,you should go there yourself and get the sensoround, it is worth the trip.

I watch most of them go up from my front porch in Orlando, fun to watch with my 4 year old.

Being the space junkie that I am, hope to see launches in HD, and would really love HD from space, earth would look awesome. I was at the first shuttle launch in 1981 when it wasn't known if the thing would even fly. By a stroke of luck got a VIP area pass. This was when they let you get about 3 miles from the pad, can't do that anymore. It was probably the most dramatic, awesome event I will ever witnessed in my lifetime. The ground actually shakes when that beast is lit. Memory is still vivid.
Imagine if the had HD for STS-107 launch ,they could have ordered an abort back to KSC. Hope to see STS-114 in HD. Have seen the 98 Glenn launch at local HT store and it was superb PQ.

I always thought it would be the coolest thing to see a Space Shuttle launch in person. But the problem with vacations for most people is a limited time window.....if I drove all the way down there, and there is a weather delay, or some other delay...I'd be kind of disappointed.

The closest I've gotten to experiencing a real shuttle launch is the IMAX Film, "The Dream Is Alive"

I remember seeing at the IMAX theatre at the Smithsonian way back in the late 80's....

It was my first introduction to IMAX and wow...was that an experience.

I heard on the radio the other day that May 15th is the date that has been set!!!
Yes it's May 15th. You can't get an exact time anymore post 9/11.

Shuttle launches in person are truly amazing. Night launches are the best(this will most definitely be a day launch for safety reasons). With night launches you can see the shuttle boosters clearly from Miami.
I lived in Daytona (Stundent at ERAU) and had the opportunity to catch a night launch from the causeway.

Wow!

The single most spectacular experience I've ever had. It's not noise at that point. It's your existance.... Watching the soundwave come across the water is amazing to behold.
Dear Discovery, HDNet, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS please broadcast the launch of the Space Shuttle return to space this May in HDTV on your HD broadcasting networks. Thank you. Sincerely your viewers. :)

ditto
There was a press briefing on NASA TV yesterday about the additional TV coverage of the upcoming shuttle launch.

The presentor mentioned the upgrade of many of the cameras - especially the tracking cameras to HDTV. Some HD cameras were also added at new viewing locations.

Total cameras (SD, HD, 32mm, 16mm, etc.) last flight was 80 - this upcoming flight will have 106.
I'm assuming all the major broadcast networks will be covering it and most likely in HD. Based on the tragic happening(s) in the past this will get a lot of coverage.
