The RAM might work, but probably only in single channel mode at a lower speed. In other words, don't do it.

4GB is plenty for any HTPC tasks. If you absolutely must have more, get two 4GB dual channel kits for a total of 8GB. Frankly, your CPU is overkill for a HTPC too. If all you're doing is watching video then your CPU will spend its entire life doing a whole lot of nothing.

However, if you'll be using this box for transcoding or gaming, then feel free to go crazy on the CPU and RAM.

so 4x 2GB sticks may be my best bet?

i think i want the added RAM because ill be running windows 7, and do a lot of multitasking like surfing the net, uploading and editing pictures, watching movies, burning dvds, etc.

plus i have a pretty extensive media library (well over 1 terabyte of music and movies) and it can take a lot of memory to run it all smoothly. plus i like things like pretty screensavers and what not.

The mb suppors only DDR2. Buy two of this DDR2-800 kit (8GB in total; cheaper than DDR3 6GB).

Win7 takes less ressource than Vista. 4gig is enough for a HTPC.

That is a total waste of money. Kind of like buying a ferrari when you live in a city with a speed limit of 50km/h and 2 feet pothole everywhere.
