My HTPC is running xp....should i upgrade to window 7.

at hi resolution, the windows fonts are too small to read, will windows 7 correct that?

7MC is much better than XPMC. lots of reasons but primary one that comes to mind is dxva


If your fonts are too small, adjust your dpi (start - help - search - DPI) (XP or W7)

Agree win7 is much better than xp. The whole mediacenter interface is nicer and easier to use. I can't think of anything major but all the minor things work a lot easier.

I tried XPMC and gave up, too many workarounds to get it going. W7 works right out of the box for the most part.

Anything Home Premium and above and you're good.

Only the "basic" (not even available as a separate retail product) does not have WMC.

Professional does not have Media Center. Only buy Home Premium or Ultimate. No reason for Ultimate unless you need remote desktop, so get Home Premium.

My copies of W7 Pro certainly do have Media Center. ( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...fessional.aspx )


More reasons to use W7 (I don't actually use 7MC, I use MeediOS instead)


- Aero makes net video, eg. Flash, tear free.

- A generally much improved scheduling system that makes things like HTPC remote control smoother and reduces the chance of Windows stuff messing up video playback.

You're thinking Vista (Business). Windows 7 Professional does include Windows Media Center and everything else included with Home Premium.

Depends. I find the TV/DVR functionality on Windows 7 to be greatly improved. Other than that, if Vista's working fine for you, I don't see any reason to upgrade (unless you're in the mood to tinker

).

Absolutely. Win7 MC is a much more refined experience than Vista MC.

I'm a menu type and thus have never been fond of MC of any iteration, but I find myself using 7MC since I installed a tuner card.


Now if only they would directly support TV Guides here in Canada (we're such a backwater

) and gave me the choice of a menu interface I would be happier.

if you want to use QAM tuning you have to use win7. otherwise vista will be fine, but if you have the choice, go with win7, all the plugin development will be there going forward.
