I am building a central storage for my media. DVD's, photos, music.

Just trying to pick an os.

The only reason I'm looking at Windows 7 is that I understand with added codecs it will transcode on the fly which would be nice as I have various devices that either like mpeg2 or mp4.

Most of my DVD's are a straight rip to ts folders.

I have a Playstation, an LG bluray player, and Sony tv all connected with ethernet. But they won't play the DVD's unless I convert them to .mpg

If Windows 7 can transcode on the fly it would save hundreds of hours of conversion.

I understand that WHS does not do this without 3rd party software.
