Windows2000 vs XP Pro on HTPC

514 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jkaiser
I would like to use Windows2000 on my (not yet built) HTPC if it will work ok. I have a retail box full version of W2K, and I see no reason to pay for XP pro unless I have to. I know that 2000 is getting a bit old, so I wonder if I could expect to have issues with W2K? Drivers for newer video cards and misc HTPC software work ok with 2000? Intel Core 2 Duo motherboards work ok with 2000? If not I will just bite the bullet and get XP Pro. Thanks.

Yes you will have all kinds or issues (or at least a few nagging ones).

win2K doesn't know much about video levels and lot of it's core libraries for media are out or date.

But with vista right around the corner, I'd hold off and pop for a copy of vista home premium upgrade when it's available. Vista is a much better meadia OS and will allow you to use some of the new hardware coming out that will be vista only(cable card anyone?).
Thanks, that does not surprise me given the age of W2K. I still like it as a desktop OS, The first thing I did to my new XP pc was to make it look and work the same way W2K does (classic theme/killed that evil+useless search wizard/tweakUI to turn off all the garish eye candy crap...)
sotti your wrong I been run Win2000 as Media box for four years now with SageTV and BeyondTV.

Don't mean the BIGGEST MEMORY HOG there is and from what I seen of it not all that HOT and it still be 9 to 12 mouth just to get soild working drivers after it come out and has far more DRM carp.
I'm running W2K. The biggest issue has been the lack of driver support for hardware such as ATSC tuners. It has severely limited the choice of hardware I can use. Other than that it seems to work pretty well.

DRM crap while being crap, is still a nessecary evil to get access to some of the hollywood product.

Yes it's a huge memory hog, 1GB required for decent perfomance, 2GB recomended.

BUT it has a much revised audio engine that allows much better sound, and the display portion is much snappier given an appropriately spec'd machine.

Not to mention it is a more secure OS.

Win2K - and no registration every time you reload the OS!

Works great here - If I remember right, SP4 had some new issues for HTPC/media - try starting at SP3 and go to 4 at your own risk.
