I think you've run into the mute bug. Just click on WinDVD's mute button and you should hear something. The mute on-screen-display will appear while you hear the sound.
Have you tried WinDVD 4? I haven't upgraded to see if the problem was fixed.
Actually, I finally gave up on InterVideo and switched to TheatreTek.
