They make these wi-fi dongles for USB ports that can wirelessly stream data to a computer.

Do they make such a thing to an Ethernet port, specifically the one on the back of my Sony XBR9? I'm in a situation where a hard-wire or a powerline adapter isn't going to work. Need a wireless solution.

TIA

Don't know if this would specifically with the XBR9, or if this is what you're talking about, but I've used a Linksys WET11/WET54G Ethernet-wireless bridge with Xboxes and computers with good success.

Hope this helps.

I don't know about a nice compact dongle, but any WIFI router will work.

Ooh. I happen to have a Linksys G router laying around that I no longer use. Are you saying that I can reverse it somehow? Tell it to act as a receiver, not a transmitter of the wi-fi signal? Turn a wi-fi router into an access point that can pass along the internet via an ethernet port?

Tell me more, please.

This is easy to do with 3rd party firmware on your Linksys. Search for DD-WRT. Don't know if you can do it with Tomato.

EDIT: just checked, and it looks like you can use Tomato in "Wireless Ethernet Bridge" mode. I would try that first.l

I bought an Airport Express (99 dollars, unfortunately, as is the Linksys at stores), configured it to join my wireless network and then ran an ethernet cable from the Airport Express to the TV. Internet access and easy firmware updates!

I hate digging up old posts, but I just bought a XBR9 and successfully connected it to my wireless router and the Internet with a Netgear WGPS606 wireless print server. It works great in that you can connect both (it can handle up to 4 devices) the TV and the BluRay player (which my need to access the Internet) to the same device. Note that when you set it up, set up the WGPS606 first with a computer connected to it directly, then on the TV, select the 'wired' menu item (instead of 'bridged') and let the TV auto-discover the network settings.

How did you do this? I just bought the airport express. I currently use the airport extreme base station for all my wireless devices (PS3, XBOX, MACBOOK) no I have the express to use with my XBR9 and I find myself clueless. Any help is much appreciated

You have to use the Airport Express as a bridge. It will receive the wireless signal from your Extreme router and "bridge" the connection to the TV. It's vaguely like adding a wireless card to your TV.

basically all i did was plug in one end of the ethernet cable to the back of the TV and the other end to the airport express. i then went upstairs to my desktop and ran the airport utility and nothing, i dont see the airport express all i see is dennis's airport extreme. i then went to the network setup on the TV and it does not find the bridge. this is the first time i try to set up a wireless bridge so excuse me if i sound like an idiot.

Update - I was able to get the green light on the airport express by connecting it directly to the extreme router and going through the set up. So now how do I successfully set it up to work with my bravia

When running the airport utility you need to bridge the airport with the dennis's airport extreme. You will select this and that's the wifi signal you are bridging. You aren't looking for an airport signal.

I got an old Linksys WRT54G and flashed it with DDWRT, then I configured it as a Wireless bridge, which is connected wirelessly to the router in the basement. Quick and simple solution if you have an old wireless access point laying around doing nothing.
