Anyone use them? How well do they work? Looks like they go for $40-100 each -- any recommendations on models?

I just moved into a new house -- and I only have two jacks -- in

my kitchen and in my master bedroom... I either have to have some jacks added (living room, game room, computer room, extra bedroom) at ~$75 each -OR- I could go with two wireless jacks, one in the living room for the Replay, one in the computer room in case I need the modem (I use cable modem internet service)...

Any recommendations about which way to go?

Thanks

Why start a new thread instead of searching for past ones, e.g., this one?

Hope this helps.

Check out the RCA RC930. If you want to use it with a computer, you want this one. It supports speeds up to 56K (the cheaper RCA model only does 14.4 I think).

Thanks;

I'll have to check how much the lines cost I believe they said $75 each -- I was hoping to get the less-expensive wireless models -- if it is cheaper to get a line in I'll go that way.

Why pay $75 a piece when you can spend <$10 and do as many jacks as you want? The jacks themselves are dirt cheap and the wire is supercheap too!

Mainly because it is my first home -- so I'm not experienced with running wire through the attic and dropping down for outlets -- I would have to buy all the hardware + keyhole saws and the like, make a huge mess, and probably screw up one or two of the holes. In the attic, I could screw up the ceiling. Plus I'm single -- and would have to work doing this into doing EVERYTHING else myself-- like replaceing the slats on the fence, the rails on the deck, putting in ceiling fans in the game room and master bedroom, putting the light over the pool table, re-attaching trim on the house that came loose, etc etc etc - you get the idea... I might not get to it for months... so I think if I figure the time and trouble for me to do it -- it is worth either having it done professionally or working around it...

My friends all congratulated me on moving into my first home -- I'm coming to the conclusion that condolences are more appropriate! *grin*

I don't change my own oil either -- LOL

Does anyone use wireless jacks on their Replay units?

Ciao

I use the RCA 56k unit mentioned above. I did have to play around a bit in choosing wall outlets. The first pair I tried was the outlet nearest the ReplayTV for the "remote" and and outlet in the master bedroom near a phone jack for the "master". I got lots of hum (testing with a standard wired telephone), and I was concerned that the ReplayTV might not work well.

I ended up moving the "master" box to one of the kids' bedrooms where a phone jack is behind a bed. The "remote" box moved to the only other outlet possible in the living room, which though it was a longer run, is completely hidden along a wall and furniture. This pairing gave a crystal clear connection that I would be pleased to use for voice anytime. It works very well with the ReplayTV.

See this entry I wrote for the TiVo FAQ. I know this is the Replay forum but the information applies to both. In fact, one of the threads referenced in the FAQ entry is from this forum.

And make sure you read the directions about how to sync up the transmitter and receiver. I know I'm not the only one who did it wrong and thought it was broken at first. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks, Dylan, I'll look it over -- but I'm pretty sure now that assuming similar costs I'll just go ahead and get a few more phone jacks installed!

There was no way I was going to string a phone line in my living room to a phone jack (we're moving), and I didn't really care to spend an extra $50 for a wireless jack. I got one from Target for $50 and it works perfectly. They had a more expensive one for, I think, $70 or $80 describing that it was 56K capable, but who cares, if the $50 works, it works! If it works slow, it doesn't matter, as I am sleeping when it makes the call.
