I used to be able to plug in my Coax to my PC and watch about 80 channels of "basic cable". Now that Comcast is forcing the use of Digital Adapters in my area, I only get about 10 channels.

So, how do devices like HomeRun or SageTv work with PCs that accept COAX?

Not as well as they used to with Comcast. But just as good as they do with other services.

The HDHomeRun is a clear QAM tuner, and the limited basic channels on Comcast are still clear QAM, so there is no change there. For analog tuners and the old analog channels, you would need to connect the tuner to the DTA box and use an IR blaster to control it. Alternatively, you could get a CableCard tuner like the Ceton 4 tuner which is sort of available now (if you want to wait 3 or 4 months for it to ship), or the HDHomeRun Prime 3 tuner, which is supposed to be available sometime soon. You would have to use Windows Media Center to get all the channels with a CableCard tuner, though.

I just got a flier with my comcast bill.

There are three classes of channels that come with "Limited basic"

Limited basic: These are analog channels, these will be moving to the "Limited Basic digital channels"

Limited Basic Digital Channels: These are standard definition channels in clear QAM

High Definition Limited Basic: These are the High Definition local over the air channels in clear QAM.

The HDHomeRun receives only clear QAM and 8VSB signals, it does not handle analog. So in the case of the HDHomeRun, the situation is improving as the analog channels will be moving to clear QAM.

The only channels in clear QAM from Comcast will be locals (SD & HD), gov/edu/public service, shopping, and in most areas one or two others like WGN America (HD in the Detroit area) or TBS. This is Comcast's definition of Limited Basic service.

Everything else SD & HD will be encrypted.

I just went through the list that Comcast included with my bill to compare it with what I actually get with limited basic:

Code:
Code:
key:
* Channels I get that comcast does not say I should get
? Channels that comcast says I should get in analog, but don't, or if alone there is no comcast channel number for it
*** Channels I don't get that comcast says I should, and according to scte65scan are being broadcast in the middle of the limited basic filter.
+ Digital channel I get but comcast does not mention

All of the analog channels are also available via clear QAM.

Note that there are two channels that Comcast says I should get but don't.

KTSF-KBS is interesting in that it is included in limited basic, but its frequency is in the middle of the limited basic filter making it impossible to get for limited basic subscribers. This is an OTA channel, so it should be in the clear. I'm not missing it much since it is in Korean, and I don't speak Korean.

The other one is WGN HD. I do not know what frequency this is on since it is a HD channel and the mapping that scte65scan gets is for the cheapo SD set top boxes so it does not include data for any HD channels. This channel might actually be worth having.
