Some good news on the Windows Media 9 Front. If you encode your video as a widows media 9 avi file with AC3, you will have better play back for 1280x720 and 1920x1080. I played back Star Wars Episode II (1280x720/AC3) on a 1GHz machine and It played without a hitch. Go to the windows media download site and download Windows Multimedia video compression manager Beta. After you install this, you can use the windows media 9 codec with any encoding software. The bad news; it is the slowest encoding codec I have ever used. I took 24 hours to encode Episode II on a P4 2.4 GHz machine. Please let me now if there is a faster encode method.
