WMV9 encoder for mpg2 files

331 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Gary Lightfoot
I was wondering if it's possible to use the WMV9 encoder (if available) to convert DVD mpg2 files to WMV9 purely to reduce the file size for storing on a medial server.

Is the encoder available, and can it do this?

If the average movie (no menus etc) takes up around 6gig on a hard drive, converting it to WMV9 should reduce that down below 2gig. Thats' almost 4 times as many movies on a hard drive.

Anyone done this?

but it will have significant quailty loss if you want that much reduction will it not?
Google for Windows Media Encoder, or try AutoGK which uses DivX and XVID. You'll get 2x to 3x space savings but a slight loss in sharpness.
i have been doing this for a while, and it produces very nice results. i have about 200 movies on my htpc, most in the range of 1.5-2.5 gigs. i use virtualdubmod to ocnvert the video to wm9 (vbr quality 93) and mux in the ac3 files with no recompression. i did a guide a while ago, so you can search for that under my screen name. it is a bit old, but still should get you through it. just make sure to get the latest versions of the program from doom9.org

at this quality, the video typically reduces to 30-40% of the original, and it looks fine on my 36" sony tube. i havent seen these on larger tvs, so i cant speak to the results on those. however, going up to 97 on the quality would still compress to 50-60% and might look better on the larger screens. only downside of this route is that you cant really use ffdshow on the wm9 files (too much cpu), but that might change in the future when the wm9 hardware support comes along

Thanks Martin, Summit - I'll have a look and see what results I get. Your guide should help a lot Summit. :)

Psycho - the WMV9 codec allows more compression without any loss of quality - the Hi Def versions of Matrix Reloaded and SW AOTC are both 720p yet take up less space than the original DVD movie space, and Hi Def is better quality than 480 or 576 mpg2.
