Mostly an absorber, but it depends upon how dense/tight it is. A wool sweater is different than compressed rock wool. I specified a hard-to-find wool pad for under the carpeting in my theater, which was probably overkill. Wool absorbs, but the density and thickness would determine the coeficient of absorption.

To be sure, I would ask a sheep if they can hear loud noises.

Question for the acoustics experts.

Acoustically speaking, is wool an absorber or diffuser?

A little of both?

What are you using for? Wool just like fiberglass and Rockwool panels must be compressed very very tight and still be at least 2" thick to absorb low enough to be considered worthy by most people. Being that Wool isn't really used as much as the other two I'm not sure how it would compare.

If you want rythym with your absorption, you need to go with alpacas.

Yes, but alpacas tend to drool all over single ended triode amps and they'll lick the turntable. I would only use alpacas with solid state equipment.

I heard about a guy in another forum who used fish but it didn't help. His room stinks.

I heard a significant rumor that by the time Beatles For Sale was released, Brian Epstein had replaced John, Paul, George and Ringo with four very cleverly dressed Alpacas.

And that the Monkees were actually playing on all of the following Beatles albums.

Monkees make for good diffusion.

Okay, seriously.

I was wondering if it would make for a good diffuser. I have a few 18"x18" sheets of 3/8" thick 100% wool. It is packed tight.

So I was hoping to use it on the side walls to diffuse first reflections. You know, the mirror driver to side wall locations.

BTW, I detect a lot of Anti-Sheepetism, here. No need to get all bigoted

Damn Anti-Sheepites!

Well, at the risk of being called an anti-sheepite, I would have to warn you that they make lousy diffusers. For bomb disposal you really should be looking at llamas.

I would absorb 1st reflections; not use diffusion. Notice I said that rather sheepishly.

So, placing the wool sheets there would work as absorbtion of those first reflections.

Okay, thanks. I appreciate it!

I couldn't recall if the first reflections should be absorbed or diffused. And I didn't know what these 3/8" thick wool sheets would do.....absorb or diffuse.

After the new carpet gets installed, I want to try a few more room acoustic ideas.

I wouldnt put those up for first reflections, you'll be lucky to absorb down to a few thousand hz with a 3/8 panel... this will leave the voice frequencies (average 1000hz) untouched and still bouncing around the room. Why waste you time .. you could use real panel material and do a whole room for $300.

I used this 2" material (compressed fiber wool)..great absorption factors. http://www.atsacoustics.com/item--Ro...f-6--1006.html

I did all 1rst reflections cheap $18 a panel for all materials.
