Worse on bulb life- turning off and on, or leaving on?

1020 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  MarshallFaulk28
I have Panny 69lcx63 lcd projection. If I know I'll be turning the TV back on in 2 hours, would it be better on bulb life just to leave it on?

That's a close one - if it was only 30 mins, I'd say leave it but 2 hours might be the edge. The heating and cooling do hurt the bulb, but I don't know a definitive answer.

Peter
This is a great question, and I am wondering myself.

Perhaps someone has contacted the manufacturers for an answer? I'm the kind of person who usually has my TV on all evening (from when I get home from work until bed). I'm not always watching it during that time, so it would be nice to know the most efficient way to treat the bulb.
There was a thread on here a while back about this - and the general consensus was that turning the Tv off/on repeatedly did a lot more harm to the bulb then just leaving the set on.

I personally leave my set on if I am stepping away for 1 hour or less, more than an hour I then turn the tv off, I feel one hours is sufficient to return the bulb to it's natural state.
Bump for some more opinions...

If anyone can locate the previous discussion on the topic, that would be great too.

One hour does seem like a pretty reasonable amount of time.

15-20 years ago you could have gotten the same concensus about leaving PCs on 24/7. I wouldn't place a lot of weight on that consensus opinion.
It would appear that my samsung DLP has a "soft" turn on and off feature to prolong bulb life but for trips out under 30-60 min it would seem that leaving the set running would put less stress on the bulbs elements.

I've wondered how that 2000, 8000 bulb life rating was achieved. It's clear to me that running it non stop would produce a longer life then running it for 6-8 hours at a clip then off for a period and then back on. But it's nice to know I can change the blub myself unlike standard RPTV color guns. :)
Good points made here...........

Not sure anyone has the correct answer.

I am in favor of leaving on, every bulb in my house always dies on turn on as did my 5065W

Here is the response I received from Samsung on the issue:

"Thank you for submitting an inquiry.

I understand part of your concern about the life of the bulb. With normal use this will not be an issue. Turning on and off the television on a constant basis would cause more strain on the mechanism and operations. Of course it would not be wise to leave it on all the time.

We recommend using the television in a normal manner, not necessarily leaving it on for long periods of time but not turning it on and off for short periods as well. Good judgement is recommend on the use of this bulb for longer duration."

I think 1 hour seems reasonable as some have mentioned.
