Worth it to go from 114 inch to 118 inch sceen?

I was torn between 118 and 114 inch (1.78 to 1 ratio) when I bought my screen (a Carada BW). I went with the 114 inch, based on people putting fear into me of SDE and the 1.5 x screen width "ideal". My 1st row of seating (from screen to the eyeballs) is slightly less than 11 feet.

Now that I have my set up, I'm sort of wishing I had went with the 118 inch screen. They do seem to "shrink" over time. And SDE is not an issue.

However, since the difference is only 4 inches (in the diagonal) -- will I notice that much of a difference going from 114 to 118?

Is it even worth considering or would it be a waste of time and money?

The viewing surface dimensions are:

103 width x 58 height for the 118 inch.

100 width x 56 height for the 114 inch.

Your thoughts?

IMO, not worth the hassles unless you're upgrading screen quality as well.
That's only 1 1/2 inches on both sides and 1 inch in top and bottom. I highly doubt you would notice much difference in screen size for that. I would say not worth it, unless the difference is really bugging you and preventing you from enjoying your setup
I agree, not worth the hassle, unless....

An upgrade is an upgrade. If you have a buyer for your 114" screen and can help defray most of the upgrade costs, go for it. It'd be a shame to have a 114" screen sitting on the floor unused though.

Is 118 the biggest you can go? If you could maybe do 124-126, it might be a more worthwhile bump.

I was hoping I could possibly work something out with Carada for my current screen, since I've only had this screen for a couple of months.

The next step up with Carada (after 118) is 126 inches. Unfortunately, with my ceiling it wouldn't work too well. My ceiling is only 7' 9" -- so the screen would be too low to the ground with a 126 incher. (the 126 inch screen is 68 inches high with the frame). Leaving only about 2 feet of wall space.

I have a 2nd row on a 10 inch riser -- so I like the viewable part of the screen to start at about 30 inches high off the ground.
Increase your riser.

I've got just over 20 inches from the bottom of my screen to the floor.

I'm way further back than you. Front row is about 18-19 feet back. Riser is 12 3/4 inches high. Row on riser is about 25 feet back.

That riser height is perfect even with the long distance, and the low screen. Back row can see the screen perfectly.

In case you didnt know, you can have Carada CUT the 126 inch down (if something in between 118 and 126 would maximize your space.) I think all the screen makers do this for a nominal fee. I have a Da-lite hi power, electric. They cut one that was a little too big down to my specifications.

True, their website says this for custom sizes:

"If you choose one of our standard aspect ratios, then your price will be the same as the next largest standard size in that ratio. For example, a 95 inch diagonal 1.78 to 1 screen will be the same price as our standard 96 inch diagonal 1.78 to 1 screen."

So if I wanted a 122 inch screen for example (1.78 to 1 ratio), it would cost the same as the 126.

Perhaps I will do that in the future -- get a custom size -- for a nice upgrade from 114 inches.

I think a 120 or 122 might be enough of a difference from 114 to justify the cost.

I asked for 12 inches, but the builder said that 10 inches was the maximum allowed due to code restrictions (in conjunction with the ceiling height, which is 7' 8"). I think there has to be a certain amount of space between the riser floor and the ceiling.

So I'm stuck with 10 inches, unless I want to violate code.

By the way, how big is your screen, your 2nd row is pretty far back at 25 feet?
It is far back, but no one complains.

I've got a 119" hipower.

my riser is just over 12 inches, with an 8 foot ceiling. I could go a little higher, but not much, so we're in about the same boat.

You could always build a small platform with some 2x4s, making a movable riser. No code violations there, since it wouldn't be a perm structure.
