My room is really small 10x10x8 (WxLxH) and I would like to know if a CRT projector would work. If it can then I should really look into it.

I currently have a 27" Sony Direct-view, the colors are great, but the set is 4:3, and I only view DVDs and HDTV so all videos look so small that I am just sick of it.

I am trying to avoid LCDs and Plasmas at all costs, but if I have no choice ....

Willing to spend around $1000 any suggestions.

Are there any good places in the L.A./O.C. area that sell used or new
CRT projectors? Any good places for demos?

If a CRT projector can't work then I only have two options a Sony 34" XBR970 CRT widescreen set or a 51" Hitachi CRT RPTV.

You didn't say what screen size you wanted.

Most CRTs require 1.4 - 1.5x the screen width of throw, plus the 3-3.5 feet length of the PJ.

So, you'd need to mount a PJ at about 6-7' from the screen which means the screen could only be about 50" wide--in other words, not much bigger then that Hitachi. There are some PJ with shorter throws (especially the LC ones like the G70 and my [hard to find] Zenith/baro) which would allow you to maybe do a 65" screen or so. But in reality, you can't get a very big screen in that room unless you mount the PJ vertically and bounce off a mirror to get the throw you need. Then unless you get a high end PJ, you may be sitting closer to the screen then you like.

Some sets had short(er) throw lenses... I remember 1.1-1.2 being bandied about....

May be able to get a reasonable screen size with HD117 (warning... the -24s are rare as hens teeth) or HD10Ls...

PDF is a page extracted from the current (I think) Marquee hardware manual from VDCs site.

That is a small space, but it could be done. You could get a pretty nice D50 for $1000 or less (I did five years ago) and it could fit the space.

Looking at PJCalc for throw distance and screen size estimates that are conservative you could put the projector 7 feet back from the screen and get a 64 inch diagonal 16:9 image. The reality would be that you could expand the raster and get the image closer to the edge of the tubes and get a larger image. But I dont think you could go much more than 7 feet back before you dont have enough room behind the projector for air flow. And in a room that small it definitely seems like a ceiling installation would make sense so you still have room to sit.

At that screen size I'm sure 1080i would have a lot of punch and you'd have the flexibility to do other resolutions and aspect ratios...

Here's a quick model I threw together in sketchup:

If you don't have air conditioning or very good ventilation in that room or are willing to add those then forget it. Nobody brings this up much but a room that small will be heated beyond comfortable easily by pretty much any projector, to some degree RPTV's too.

Even big direct view tube tv's can throw a lot of heat.

I know since my computer(s), and two monitors that run 24/7 are bad enough but then the pj doubles what they do if not more. In the summer there's no choice but to run window a/c constantly in that room.

As for will it work at all given the size of the room, it sure will. I'm in the same boat and I run a 72" diagonal 4:3 screen. You'll want a pj based on hd6, hd144 or hd145 lenses NOT something huge either as it'll take away needed distance from lens to screen. (like if you try to fit a barco 808 or 1208)

I would suggest a NEG PG or similar small EM focus model in your case if you do go that route. Or if you aren't going HDTV a ECP is also a good choice given it's tall but thin design.

If you want a larger screen you could always ceiling mount the projector facing away from the screen and install a tilted mirror on the back wall.

Note: For the image to clear the projector, the projector will have to be tilted down at a fairly good angle. But! The tilted mirror can correct the steep angle, and you will not need to use any keystone correction on your projector. Your raster can fully maximize your phosporus.

My setup is similar:

...wait a minute... My keystone statement is wrong.

You will still need keystone correction, but no more than usual.

What's in the adjoining rooms? Any chance for a rear projection setup?

Or at least mount the pj in an adjoining room / closet and shoor thru an opening in the wall.

What are some of the shorter throw projectors, anyway? I know some of the older zenith models could do this - but I thought they were video only? Would a Barco be a short throw model?
