I saw the DVE HDDVD at Frys today - I think it was around $25 or so.

I'm trying to determine if it's worth the purchase if I would only use it for the "basic" adjustments found in a TV's settings-menu.

I have one of the 50" SONY SXRD (2005 model?) projection sets and have just used the THX Optimizer to adjust settings to my preference. I don't want to mess with the service menus so I would be limiting myself to color, sharpness, contrast, etc..

I also wouldn't use it for audio since my speakers arent the greatest and neither is my receiver.

Why would you not calibrate your speakers? Even if they suck, you still want your levels adjusted correctly to get accurate surround sound. I would pick up an SPL meter (or borrow) and DVE. I think buy.com is selling DVE for $15. It's amazing how off you can be by calibrating to your ear.
