I am demoing a VT540, and love MANY of the aspects of its use. However, the crawlies and cross-hatching of large solid fields drives me a little nuts, as does the motion artifacts (using s-video from DVD and Satellite). My old Philips SVGA projector is dimmer, lower contrast, not as sharp, but it DOES have nice onboard processing - none of the above stated problems. Would an HTPC improve these areas specifically? Or are they an artifact of XGA resolution or LCD projection, or this projector specifically? Thanks for the responses. Otherwise, the brightness, sharpness, color saturation and ease of use are great on this little performer (blacks could ALWAYS be better, though :~)

I own a VT540 and run it through an HTPC. If you'd like the specs of the system I can give you those, but after an adjustment using a test pattern given for fixed panel projectors posted earlier, the crawlies basically went away!! I use it 99% of the time through the HTPC, even for TV viewing. I use the HiPix as a capture card for ATSC and NTSC decoding, so the signal still travels through the HTPC. I'll try some "real" tests tonight via the S and Composite inputs and let you know what happends. I still see some crawlies via the NTSC signal, but I've always had them no matter what monitor I use so I think it's source related. The ATSC (HD) signal is crystal clear and completely smooth. DVD's played through this unit now look awesome. If you have the means you should try one of these with an HTPC and judge for yourself.

Thanks for the reply. I actually would appreciate an equipment/software list of your HTPC. I tried posting a thread on the HTPC forum requesting simple lists of HTPC set-ups, but only limited repsonses. Its a shame - the overall feel regarding HTPC in this forum is that if you already aren't on your second generation HTPC and into tweaks and programmer-level registry and BIOS changes, you've missed the boat. Aren't we to the "plug-and-play" beginner HTPC stage yet? Or is the hardware/software still so fussy and "beta" level that only very computer savvy folks can own one?

Not a rant - just looking for some updated info for beginners.

Please dont get discouraged with the HTPC forum... yes the level of discussion does get very technical http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/eek.gif but try to focus your questions into specifics and I think you will get your answers...


There are so many variables in the HTPC world that general questions are hard to answer, you may also need to read up a bit on some of the oft mentioned threads to get up to speed...
