I am planning on having cabinets built above my speakers and powered subwoofers. The top of the cabinets will be 8 feet high. I am trying to come up with a cabinet design that will not interfere with sound and not rattle from the bass. This is a cabinet design idea I have.

The brown colored areas are the cabinets and shelving and all the wood. The speakers and subwoofers will be standing on a wood floor (although I could put rugs underneath them if required). Here are what the abbreviations mean on the diagram attached:

  • CW = Klipsch Cornwall III
  • HY = Klipsch Heresy III
  • 15" SW = Paradigm Defiance X15
  • 12" SW = Currently a BIC F12 but will probably replace it with a better 12" subwoofer in the future.
  • PA = Anthem AVM 60 Preamplifier/Processor
  • A = Monoprice Monolith 5 Amplifier
  • TV = LG C8 OLED TV 65"

Yep they are going to pose a problem.

Okay, I modified it. I gave the speakers way more space above them and removed the wooden strips on the sides so no sound could get trapped there. How about now? Would the cabinets still pose a problem?

I think you will be fine.

From your manual:

PLACEMENT
Your Klipsch Heritage loudspeakers will perform well in a
variety of locations but best results will be achieved using the
following general guidelines:
• All: Place on a common wall 6 to 15 feet apart.
• La Scala, Cornwall, Heresy: Position them equidistant from
the wall behind the speakers.
• All: Angle speakers toward the listener and even with or
forward of any adjacent obstructions.
• La Scala, Cornwall, Heresy: Placing them near a corner or
wall provides the greatest amount of bass while moving the
speakers away from room boundaries reduces bass energy.
• All: Asymmetrical placement of a pair of speakers from
adjacent side walls can smooth room-induced bass
unevenness.
• Experiment with the above guidelines to suit your taste and
to compensate for your room's acoustic characteristics.

Forget the cabinets. Just put some artwork up there to break up the big expanse of wall. Cubby holes are the bane of good sound. Shoving speakers into them purposely is like shooting your own toe off purposely. Why would you do it?

Speakers like space around them, especially large speakers. That's just the way it is. Get comfortable with the idea, then fire your interior designer.

I just spoke with Klipsch Technical Support and they said it should be perfectly fine since the Cornwall IIIs and Heresy IIIs are both front-ported, and the cabinets will start 15" above the Cornwalls. Also, the front of the Cornwalls will be a total of 20" from the wall and the cabinets are only 13" deep total which means the front of the Cornwalls will technically be 7" in front of the cabinets. The front of the Heresy will be at least a few inches in front of the cabinets. The cabinets will be VERY heavy duty and made specifically not to shake or rattle. I have a Paradigm Defiance X15 15" subwoofer on the left side of my diagram which I will put acoustic foam underneath it to prevent too much floor vibration, and I have a Sunfire XTEQ12 12" dual side-firing (one active on passive) subwoofer on the right side of the diagram which I will also put acoustic foam underneath. I don't see how my setup will be a problem. I am making all the necessary accommodations for the speakers, probably even more than necessary since Cornwalls and Heresy are front-firing speakers.

Here's an updated more accurate diagram of my speakers and cabinets set-up:

I would return the Sunfire and get another Defiance.

Well I decided on no cabinetry above my speakers at all. I don't want to chance it and regret it later. There will only be shelving under my TV to hold my Pre-Amp and Amp and a space for the Heresy III, but the Heresy III will be standing on the floor and ahead of the shelving at least several inches to avoid any acoustic issues.

Thanks for the responses.

I don't have space for another Defiance X15. The Sunfire is 3000 watts and has dual-firing 12" woofers (one active and one passive). It's a BEAST!!
