While this thread was hilarious, I found a link that was even more interesting ( http://www.smarthomesbook.com/outdoor.shtml ). This guy runs an x1 on a 20'x10' screen, outdoors!!!

Now, I've seen a lot of you guys that are running 100"+ (I would run 96" if I had the space), but is anyone scrapping "big screen" (50"-60") or the "really big screen" (70"-120") for the "ultra big screen" (150"-200") or the "rediculously big screen" (200"-300")? It would be handy to know who has simply done it, and opinions, but it would be even nicer to know if anyone actually uses their projector like this normally, and opinions.

When the nights get warmer, I'm going to have to attempt an outdoor viewing, myself!!!

I have an X1 and my screen size is 129" x 73" widescreen, so that's like 140 something inches diagonal? It's frigging huge, and I love it

In reference to the outdoor shot, I wonder if anyone watching asked the projectionist to stop applying the anamorphic squeeze to a non-anamorphic image.

It always looks like a terrible distortion to me. But the idea sure sounds good!

WOW!!! I would have never thought the X1 could go that big and outside also where there is light (moonlight) and what ever else is around.


How come some post in here say the X1 is a dim projector but if it's doing this it must not be that dim.


I'am still new to the projectors so don't flame me if I said something out of place

I think you have the same mindset everyone else here does. No one tries it because they assume it can't be done. Well, as soon as it warms up some, I'm going to try it, firsthand. Unfortunately, I found out about it in the middle of January.

I've got a 2.35 screen that is 10 feet wide. Picture looks really great. Light controlled room, goo on blackout material. I actually wish I had gone bigger or at least a 16x9 screen but the blackout material only came 54" high from my supplier.

He must have had it in presentation mode because 400-500 lumens (in film mode) is probably way too dim for screen that size. He also doesnt seem to know much about PJs since he says hes projecting 1100 lumens (unelss he really is in presentation mode) and that it has a "16.7-million color wheel", he might be surprised to know its actually 400-500 lumens and a 4 color (or segment) color wheel.

Maybe the author wasn't even the guy that did the setup. Even if it was in presentation mode, though, I think the picture looks good enough to at least attempt something on that scale. I think the lighting and color depth of my x1 is more enjoyable than the local cinemas, yet I still go to them. Certainly, a 10'-15' image wouldn't be on target, but maybe it would still be worth watching.

I have filled a 40 foot theatre screen with a digital projector (I think it was an older optima). It looked pretty good, not as good as film but acceptable. We actually ran a movie like this from a DVD to the paying public.

You work in a theater? Why what was the resolution/lumens and why did you use the digital that time instead of film?

Yes I run two theatres. I am unsure of the projector stats, we borrowed it from another theatre. It is a few year old optima (I think).


We played Bonhoeffer which is a very small documentry film. They only had it on DVD or 16mm film. We chose DVD because 16mm is PITA.

I might as well resurrect this thread...

I'm in the process of building my 116"x54" screen. I bought blackout cloth and am looking into wood for the frame, now. It's not quite 10' wide, but awfully close. I hope to have it constructed by sometime next week. I'll definately post when I'm done.

The frame layout is below. If anyone has suggestions, please give them. I'm assuming that the 54" BO will stretch around the 54" frame.
