I'm receiving my X1 tomorrow and I'm a little confused as to how I can get 480p to the X1. Is the only way to do to run an S-video cable from my DVD player and have an s-video to VGA adapter so I can use the 480p capability of the VGA connection on the X1?

Thanks

Or perhaps I've asked the wrong question?

What connection should I use to get the best picture quality out of my Infocus X1 projector? As far as I know, and I may be wrong, if I use the component video connection I can only get 480I. And the only Input on the X1 that takes the progressive scan is the the VGA connection.

I am so new to this I probably shouldn't comment but I will anyway. :)

To get progressive scan images into your X1 you can use your DVD players component outputs and run the signal do the X1's VGA adapter. You will need the appropriate adapter and I bought a component to VGA from InFocus yesterday. I'll pick up the projector locally today. I think you can go S-Video to VGA as well but I am not certain.

As far as which is better, I haven't had the chance to test mine yet so I can't say. Progressive scan should give you the best results as there will be no interlace issues to deal with. The X1 has the faroudja (sp?) line doubler chip for the S-video input but it will take someone with more knowledge than me to tell you exactly what that does for you and if it somehow brings an interlaced signal up to a progressive one.

Well I'd really appreciate it if you could give me an update as to which connection you find better.

I see. So if I just run an S-Video from my progressive scan DVD player, directly into X1's s-video plug which is interlaced, does it work?

bottom line. The X-1 will only take progressive (p) through the VGA (DB15) connector. You can use any sort of adapter to VGA for a progressive signal.

All other connectors on the X-1 will only take interlaced (or standard video).

The exeption on the VGA is 1080i witch is an interlaced signal.

you cant run progressive scan over your dvd players s vid output.

buy the vesa/component adapter, it's the only way to put your dvd's progressive signal into the x1.

I find the x1's processor works fine for me, and run component / s vid adapter, and leave the vesa slot hooked to my puter. The x1's svid connector has extra pins to allow component input this way, then the onboard farudja chip makes the input progressive.

using the vesa slot bypassses the chip and you see the pure progressive image output of your dvd player. Using the svid or composite connector the signal gets processed by the farudja chip.

I agree with celticwolf. I have a XV-N50BK JVC DVD player with software progressive, and it really is terrible quality in comparison to the X1's Faroudja processor on 480i. So, like him, I use component to s-video and leave the VGA port for my 'puter. I like the JVC player because of the FineVideo settings it has, such as Gamma, which the X1 doesn't have.

Perhaps there's a visible difference if one has a DVD player with the same Faroudja chip as the X1, but I don't, so this works great for me. YMMV, of course.

It's worth mentioning here that the component signals into the special Infocus s-video adapter are NOT, in any way, 'downconverted' to s-video. A salesperson at BestBuy tried to tell me this was so, but it's not. The special s-video conn. has 3 extra pins for the 3 component signals.

Ron Yost .. really loving his X1 after two weeks.

I don't have enough posts to post a url, so that is why I am breaking it up like this, but this should help explain it a little better.

I tried connect my laptop to the VGA port last week and found that the resolution is the best in native mode (probably no scaling involved when compared to 4:3 or 16:9 modes). However, the screen size is the full size just like in 4:3 mode. Not sure if it happens only after I upgraded to firmware 4.1 or it is always the case. The issue is that I am using a 16:9 screen. This make whatever coming out of my laptop to be bigger than the physical screen unless I use 16:9 aspect ratio. But the resulting image is so so.

Any clues? Actually, I don't plan to use the laptop as source but just playing around with various inputs.
