Please forgive me if this has been talked about, but 2 searches turned up nothing. (and I'm stuck on a 14.4 dial up this week)

I have an Infocus X1, and just moved to a new apartment. I'm trying to figure out the best way to hook everything up.

I have an Onkyo DS-777. 5.1 DTS receiver with composite and svideo switching. Until now, I've just run everything into it using SVideo, then SVideo out to the projector. The picture quality from the DVD player is ok, but the Hughes DirectTV/Tivo box looks a little blury. Unfortunately, the only options on the DTV unit are SVideo or Composite, and I have to pick one or the other for all devices connected to the Onkyo.

I THINK I remember reading that the processor in the X1 only works on composite input, and I lost the manual in the move. Is this true? If so, would I end up with a better picture using that over SVideo?

The other question is, just how much better is a progressive scan DVD player going to look if I wire it to the X1 using component? I have the component to VGA adapter, so it is an option, but it would be a an additional 30' run with the 3 cables, so unless it is going to be a noticeable difference, I'd rather not waste the money or the appearance sacrifices. (projector is mounted on the ceiling in the living room, only wire option is up the wall and across the ceiling) My understanding is that the Component input is untouched by the X1's processor, and thus the theory would be that composite might win out here too.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Here is a cut and paste instruction I use whenever explaining the search area here at AVS. (The Search I speak of is on the top of the webpage [to the left of HT Marketplace], not the search just above the threads list.)

"Use the "crawler" setting in the lower left corner of the Search area as the default "faster" setting does very little and is not faster. (Posters are often saying they can't find any reference to a desired topic.)"

Hi Speedy - you need to post one more time, your number is a little scary.

The Faroudja DCDi chip (DCDi is a video mode algorithm that stands for Directional Correlation Deinterlacing. It was designed for video based material like fast-paced sporting events. Its purpose is to eliminate jagged edges (jaggies) along diagonal lines caused by interpolation) in the X1 will work wonders using the Svid connection. Use it over composite if you can.

The DCDi however will not work with a component input source. IMO, the PQ is a tad better using the component.

Hope this helps.

This is incorrect. There are two component video inputs on the X1, both of which use adapters.

One uses an adapter to send component video into the S-Video terminal, this only accepts 480i signals and this will make use of the Faroudja DCDi chip for deinterlacing. This is why many people using X1s don't worry about having a progressive scan DVD player. This input with a component connection from a good interlaced DVD player will yield a fantastic picture.

The Second component input goes through another adapter into the VGA terminal. This accepts 480p, 720p, and 1080i DTV/HDTV inputs. This input does not make use of the DCDi chip, but given a high quality source such as an HDTV set-top box yields a stunning picture.

Actually there are no component inputs native to the X1.

In order to connect via component you must use either the VESA to component adapter or the SVideo to component adapter. Only the VESA side will accept a true progessive signal. However, you must use the the other to utilize the onboard DCDi. Many DVD players on the market today also have DCDi processors which can be used through the VESA input.

I stand corrected. Thanks, Philip.
