X1 Newbie Question...

462 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  gregoryperkins
I just got my X1 like 1 or 2 weeks ago, and I'm having a really hard time deciding whether I should go with 16:9 or 4:3 for the projector screen...

I have already bought my Black-out Cloth, that is 96" x 54". Now, I'm debating whether I should cut it down to 72" x 54". The reason I'm debating this is because I think i'll have issues playing pc games on a 16:9 screen.

What do u guys recommend as the best solution!?!?

I plan on using the pj for the following:

1. regular Meedio interfaced HTPC

2. NHL 2005

3. Watching movies from the computer and DVDs

4. the occasional browsing of the net

5. annnnd hopefully add a TV tuner sooon...

Thanks in advance!

I have the X1 also and I run it in 16:9 mode with a 16:9 screen. But, I don't use it for video games. I just use it for DVD's and occasional HDTV. I guess you should determine if you will use 4:3 sources more or 16:9 sources, and choose accordingly. The screen size you're talking about sounds small though. You should read the article "4:3 or 16:9" at Projectorcentral.com, it's great and will help you decide.
Ok, I read the the article on "4:3 or 16:9" from projectorcentral, and I noticed something that may be my best option.

Ok, say I have a 16:9 screen and I want to play a pc game in 4:3, it says that I have the option of having the 4:3 picture placed in the middle two-thirds of the 16:9 screen and that I have black columns on each side of the picture. This seems like the best option for me.

Butttt, is this possible with the Infocus X1?!?...how would I set this up?!...anyone else doing something similar to this with their X1?
I have an X1 but no Xbox - I would assume that the Xbox puts out 480i?? If so, put the X1 in "Native" mode (not 4:3 or 16:9) - if I'm correct you should get a small 4:3 window in the middle of the 16:9 area of your screen...

Probably with the zoom lens to scale the image down. A 4:3 screen is your best bet, just get the biggest screen you can find and when you go 16:9 it will be equivalent to what size you wanted your 16:9 screen to be. When you're playing 4 player split screen on XBOX you want the biggest 4:3 screen you can get. Also would you rather have bars on the sides or on the top and bottom (which all of us are used to after years of letterboxed DVDs on 4:3 CRTs).

I see what u are saying, but the problem is that Black-out cloth around her only comes as 54" wide!!!!!! So my biggest option for 4:3 is to go 72" x 54", whereas my biggest option in 16:9 is 96" x 54"!!

I gotta play around with the zoom and see if that would work.

I don't plan on playing Xbox on it, only PC GAMES (mostly NHL 2005)! Also, episodes and sports events. Those are my only 4:3 needs, everything else will be mostly movies!!
goto walmart.com and search "blackout"

much bigger cloth
Get a 16x9 screen and set the pj to native mode when you want 4x3 content and it will fit the screen without adjustment. That's what I've been doing.

We are at the end of the line for 4x3 content... Hey, I can dream, can't I?
