Ok, here is the situation. I have an infocus X1 projecor, I will be using it in 16:9 mode, and the viewers eyeballs will be about 15 1/2 feet from the screen. Maybe 15 3/4 feet from the screen. It will be a 16:9 ratio screen. How big should the screen be?

The projector could be as far as 17 feet from lens to screen, or closer, depending on what is the best situation for picture quality and screen size.

Right now, I have a setup where my Infocus X1 is about about 18 1/2 feet from lens to screen. The screen is 113 inches 16:9. Eyeballs to screen is about 17 feet. Looks great with HDTV, but kind of bad with crappy TV. I have to move back to like 21 feet when it's crappy TV. But I usually only use it with HDTV, DVD or 480p and up type sources.

Based on my calculations, I thinking that I will go with a 96.329 screen if it's really 9.5 feet, if it's 9 feet, then 89.493 screen. 16:9 diagonal.

This doesn't answer your question, but why wouldn't you make the screen 4:3 and just not use the top/bottom when in 16:9 mode? Does a 16:9 image on a 4:3 screen not look as good (does the rest of the screen light up, reducing contrast) or is it a space consideration, or something else I don't know of?

There is the light spill factor, and then there is the fact that I don't view any 4:3 sources. Also the height of the ceiling is a factor too.

But it's just better for me to have the 16:9 screen with the projector set to 16:9 mode, and everything else is painted flat black to prevent all light spillage.
