X10 and New Home Theater

291 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  tvtech1
We are going to be building a house with a home theater in the basement, I am starting to look into some automation. I have a couple of X10 wall switches in my current house that have dim on/off features, they are controlled by a radio receiver that plugs into the wall and a remote. When I turn the lights on or off, the receiver emits a very loud click, it almost sounds like a mouse trap. Do all X10 systems work this way or do I just have a cheap piece of crap, I don't want to purchase a large amount of X10 pieces for my theater if this is the way they all work. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The click you hear is from a switch with a mechanical relay in it. Such switches are normally used for appliances or Fluorescent loads. Dimming switches are silent; the control elements are solid state devices. Before purchasing X-10 devices, you should use the search function on this forum. There is a lot of information on various features and brands, good and bad.
I agree do your homework before making final desicion.I have some X10 and like it, but when I do a dedicated romm i'll be probably going Lutron. That said, if you do go X10 look at smarthome for some of the nicer X10 products.

The receiver has an appliance module built into it. It's address can usually be set to 1 or 9, set it to an address you don't use, or, open the module up and disable the relay.
