XA-2 vs A35 for best audio via analog outs?

1549 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  CalgaryCowboy
My receiver doesn't have HDMI, and I now use the analog outs of my RCA HDV5000 to listen to Dolby TrueHD.

What audio codecs will the XA-2 and the A-35 allow me to listen to via analog outs?

Is there a big difference between the new codecs and Dolby TrueHD?

Thanks much!

The XA2 and A35 will both output TrueHD and DD+ using the 5.1 analog outs. Dolby TrueHD IS a new codec.
Oh, OK. Well, I thought there were some newer audio codecs than TrueHD and DD+. Isn't there a DTS HD or DTS Master? Or a DD TrueHD Master or some such?

I guess my question is about codecs newer than those. I already can listen to those via analog on my RCA. I'm trying to find out if I can upgrade my audio via analog with a XA-2 or A-35. If not, I may as well stick with the RCA.
DTS HD Master Audio will not output via analog...you will get the DTS core only, which sounds pretty good as the bitrate is 2x that of DVD's DTS-ES.

DTS HD Master Audio will output via HDMI, though...if you have a receiver that can decode it.

The analog outputs will output Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, TrueHD, and PCM. The XA2 has burr-brown DACs which should sound a little better.
The XA2 also has the Reon video chip with selectable video controls. Build quality is better, and I will bet that a bunch of stuff we can't see is better as well. I have never had one iota of trouble with either of the X series, XA1 or XA2. My guess is that the laser is aligned better, chassis stiffer, maybe even better algorithms for things like error correction, and other processing.

True. However most dual owners reported negligible difference in upconversion.

No offense but this "build quality is better" is just downright hilarious argument for a HT/living room standalone desktop player; for me it borders cluelessness especially given how nice the A35 is.

I'd call it BS if you don't mind..
Link, please.

OTOH A35's PQ was reported to be slightly better in HD.

What DACs where used in the A1/RCA model when compared to the A35? My AVR is out for repairs and have purchased a A35 and can't decide whether to put away the A1 or keep it for use with CD and the good DAC in it.
