My current receiver is an older Onkyo TX-SR600 without HDMI connectivity. I want to upgrade to a new receiver with HDMI 1.3 connectivity. Since I already have the XA2 HD-DVD player that uses the Reon chip for video processing and upscaling to 1080P, why would I need a new receiver that performs video processing? For my purposes, would there be any disadvantage to getting one of the new HDMI 1.3 receivers, such as one of the new Onkyo 500 series, that just passes through the 1080P signal from the XA2 DVD player? My big concern is being able to listen to HD-DVDs with TrueHD using the HDMI connection, which would seem to not be a problem since the XA2 also already decodes TrueHD.

I don't need more than two HDMI inputs for my setup. I also have a Mits 57831 1080P display and Klipsch reference series bookshelf speakers. Any advice on a new receiver is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

It is my understanding that regardless of what receiver you buy, the XA2 will still do the processing. Did you check out the $399 reciever thread? i am tempted to dump my SR500 in favor of and HDMI reciever if the BM fix is not released soon.

HD-DVD specs state that decoding has to be done at the DVD player, so IMO getting a receiver that decodes TrueHD / DTS MA would be insurance for Blu-Ray. It's not in Blu-Ray specs to decode at the player, so there is a possibility that some players would leave it up to the receiver to decode the high def soundtracks.

To be absolutely safe, you can wait until the new batch of receivers comes out with HDMI 1.3 and onboard TrueHD / DTS MA decoding. I didn't wait and went with a current HDMI Denon.
