XB2 Native HD Games?

955 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  DaverJ
Has there been any word on games for the next X-Box that will be native HD and not just scaled up to a pseudo-HD resolution? I would rather see a game created as a native 720P and/or 1080i game with an option to down-rez to boob-tube resolutions if needed. Any speculation, rumor, news on this front?

There are absolutely zero confirmed specs for the Xbox . MS has made no official announcements about anything.

There are rumors and speculation both ways, but nothing concrete.
And does Microsoft control what a game publisher intends for a given game? I mean, if a game publisher intends to make a game that natively is in 720P or 1080i does Microsoft prohibit that publisher from saying so before the hardware launch?

Those specs will definitely be available sometime between the system announcement and the hardware launch.
So, I am not sure what this means to my last question. Does Microsoft control game publishers in game specification publications?

Historically, all game publishers are under NDA's for all details prior to the announcement of a console.

Screenshots are sometimes allowed to be released but not much else.
There haven't been any announcement, but I'd be willing to bet that games will be 720p, not 1080i. It's a lot easier to do 1280 x 720 than it is 1920 by 1080, especially since the Xbox's GPU normally renders games at progressive scan anyway.

We're talking about a whole new generation here

if it can't do 1080i, that's just lame....
There is a good summary of speculations at Gamespot in the Xbox section, if anyone really wants to read up on them. It also lists "official" MS quotes.
I'm sure this same thread will be started a hundred times between now and E3 but I'll say the same thing... NOTHING IS CONFIRMED NOR WILL IT BE BEFORE THEN. Thank you, goodnight.

Obviously nothing is confirmed but I'd feel very safe in expecting complete HD compatibility. It may mean that games are rendered in 720p and scaled for 1080i output (my money is on this) but fully expect HD games and output at both 720p and 1080i. They've put a lot of time into this stuff and no one wants to leave anything on the table this time around or give anyone a reason not to buy their console.
I just think it would be sad to master games in 480i because the perceived market is wholely insufficient or worthy of anything else. This is the current state of misconception. Actually, I am surprised Microsoft isn't aiming itself as an X-Box HD with all games in HD. This would be an appropriate decision, I would think, to offset the next Playstation including a BD player.
Bill Gates said all XBOX 2 games would support HD resolutions. Period.

My guess is that they will mostly be 720p. Hopefully XBOX 2 will have a decent internal scaler to convert to other resolutions like 1080i for those whose displays require it.

I hope it has a good scaler. After playing GT4 in 1080i (and not even real 1080i), I am just not enjoying my 480p xbox games as much.
